Yep this is the reason why. Reiner spent so long with the survey corps that he saw them as people and began to feel really bad for killing a fuckton of people. The only way for his mind to not make him kill himself was to create a split personality.

One as a soldier of humanity and one as warrior of the titans. In season 2 when he revealed himself you could already see some scenes where he was talking out of two different perspectives
