You might be interested in seeing what the curse mark originally looked like in the manga: https://i.imgur.com/CT2EuNl.png . Fairly obvious why they ended up changing it for the anime, which had a much larger American audience, but in Japan, the manji is used to mark Buddhist temples, and the Hyuuga clan have a lot of Chinese traditional religious elements in their jutsu.
