He raises his child by just setting an example and whenever he gives advise, he says the exact right thing 100% of the time. Very well written and one of the wisest characters in the entire show.

The animation change, the soundtrack, seeing Shikamaru out of his element, seeing the type of father Shikaku is, the single continous shot. It's so good. His father is such a good parent. He knows Shikamaru in and out and knew exactly what he needed in that moment. Shikamaru has never been overly emotional and he's always so level headed but its important for him to learn that mourning the dead doesn't make you weak or a bad ninja. It makes you human. He's usually the one telling others to think clearly, not to let their emotions get ahold of them, but to see him in a funk and unable to get out his feelings only to end in him screaming and crying like that. So good. A beautiful episode.
