Episodes like these remind me of Lost. That show too spent whole episodes on nearly every character backstory. Lost is still the gold standard of character development to me. Flash forward and flashbacks, flash sideways, on top of initial characterization. Naruto similarly has rich backstories.

Also, they didn't give Naruto Minatos last name because he had a lot of enemies and they were trying to hide the fact that the fourth hokage had a son so they gave him Kushinas.
