in that fight with Erigor, Natsu was really purely raging and accidentally affected Erigor's wind XD Although this one was a fluke, he does have a lot of smart moves later on in the series. Natsu can be smart when it comes to fighting :D and yes, FT does have very good pacing, never felt like they spent too much or too little time on an event (except the filler arcs, but well... there aren't many fillers so don't worry about it and most of them are interesting)
