God, you should have done this with lyrics, this song just has some of the most breathtaking lyrics ever.

Thaat concept was created by Vishnu Narayan bhatkhande in mordern times around( 1900) fro Hindustani music and for Carnatic system it was created in around 1600s . But the Raags existed for centuries before that. Thaat system is for learning purpose. And at the end Raags have the rules. I was just trying to keeep it simple for them :)

Its not Raag. Thaat decides the notes used. Raag has more nuances which notes are used going up the scale and down as well as how they are sung.

Yes they are improvising. Indian music basically has two comonents Raag - ( the notes you are allowed in the copmosition) taal - number of beats in cycle if you remain in the boundary of these two you can improvise as much as you want , even that is the main feature. Where one artist questions other will something and the other singer or instrument player answers with his/her instrument. This is iterally called Question-Answer ( swaal - jawaan in hindi ) Singer's ear are trained to know when the 1st beat of cycle start ( called SUM in hindi ) He/She picks up from that point whenever they want.
