But I've been told that the way we are emotionally processing it can help with healing time so it's worth it to try to be self compassionate with ourselves

You are absolutely doing a wonderful job of being helpful! In December I injured myself quite severely it took until recently to heal from that fall. Last night taking my dog out I tripped and re-injured myself in the same way ,my first thought was I just can't win , it's not as bad as before but once was enough! It's not quite the same subject as you were talking about but it helped regardless
