When I first started model photography, pretty much all of my shoots were outdoors on location. Back then I did not own any studio lighting, nor had I worked out that I could set up a space in my home. Over time, and especially since the pandemic, the easiest option for me has been to shoot in that studio space. I can control the lighting and I never have to cancel a shoot due to wet weather or train strikes. And yet I really love using natural light, and so over the past few months I have made a big effort to do more outdoor shoots.
Sian jumped at the chance to shoot outdoors, as it's something we hadn't done together yet (apart from an hour between studio sets on one day, but I'm not counting that). I checked the Thames tide times and worked out that one of my favourite locations, Wapping "beach", would be possible for a shoot. I love it there - it's very quiet, and has some interesting features that work really well with the light. You just have to keep an eye on the tide... I did nearly get caught out once, and only just managed to keep my feet dry!
Sian is a dancer, and as such her poses in the past have often reflected that. But this time I wanted to go for a much more relaxed, natural look, and she absolutely smashed in. I am part the way through editing a huge number of images, including a classic black trousers/white shirt look, and an open shirt/topless look. It was a lovely day, so we started at the beach and then wandered along Wapping High Street and then on towards the Tower of London, stopping at a few places along the way to create more sets, so there will be loads more to come from this shoot.
