I do remember the push to read as a kid. Parents were afraid that TV and video games would hurt literacy rates (but not playing outside for 8 hours on the weekends). Even recently, I saw a meme saying "Get rid of the man cave, bring back the study." I mean, what is a study but a man cave with books?

That CGI Garfield show is really not that great, despite Mark Evanier being behind it again. There are some good episodes, but don't go into it expecting anything close to Garfield and Friends. One thing of note, though, June Foray did finally get an Emmy award due to her role in The Garfield Show where she voices Mrs Cauldron. If anything, look up the multi-episode Bewitched for some classic June Foray witch voice acting.

Loved the podcast, guys! Always enjoy a trip into Garfield's world of relatable laziness. ^_^

My Garfield and Friends experience is pretty ordinary. It was the show on TV before school, but not being a morning person, I really didn't watch it often. It took all of my focus to wake up, eat, get dressed, and be at the bus stop on-time. I had friends who watched it and I didn't understand how they did it, though they weren't as unfamiliar as the ones who actually had time for video games before school. I would watch the Saturday airing from time to time, but the older I got the more likely I was to sleep through it. Still, I never minded it and if it was on I'd watch it. I feel like you've been misinformed about Bluey. While there are definitely episodes here and there where the parents are tired and don't want to play with their kids, the majority are the opposite. Bluey's dad Bandit is like the idealized father. He's patient, communicates well with children, and is always down for playtime. And they roleplay constantly with almost no inhibitions. If he has to pretend his neighbor's yard is full of lava he'll do so and won't explain what's going on to his neighbor. If he has to pretend he's a baby in a public settting and throw a tantrum - no problem. As a parent who has seen most of the episodes, it's almost exhausting to watch to see how far he, and their mother, will go to entertain their children. And as a dad, Bandit presents a father that I can't possibly live up to which almost leaves me feeling a touch despondent. I do think the appeal of the show is a little overblown in that if you approach it as an adult expecting to be entertained by a great show it might let you down. It is an early childhood show through and through, it's just the best one out there at also entertaining an adult simultaneously. And most adults with little kids are exposed to shows that are completely inept when it comes to that. To be fair, they're not trying to appeal to adults and do entertain and educate children, but one can only handle so much of The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. To an adult that has experienced hours upon hours of that show, or worse, YouTube trash like Cocomelon, Bluey is like the fucking Godfather Part 2 to their Little Nicky. Not that adults can't enjoy Bluey without their kids and I'm certainly not trying to shame anyone in that category, but I would never consider watching it without my kids. If you were considering it for an episode of WAC you would probably want to approach it as a preschool show and examine just what makes it so successful in that genre compared with its peers.

Aww darn. I was hoping but I guess you can’t connect them all. Thanks Henry!

It sounds a lot like him, but it's a pretty stock voice that Greg Berger uses in a lot of toons. It's pretty close to Grimlock really in gruffness. - Henry

Talking Simpsons

Oh. The Get-Along Gang. I had one of their storybooks as a kid. They were one of the many "greeting card cartoons" of the early 80s.

Dave Dalrymple

Am I wrong or is the director of the TV station in the first episode the head elf in Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer? I couldn't find that info in IMDB. But they sound so similar I'm not sure.

Thanks for this podcast, I was obsessed with this show as a kid, it really made my Saturday mornings. Also, buddy bear #1 is right, pepperoni and mushrooms is the best (or it was, til i drastically reduced my pork intake).

Time for a Bluey ep I reckon! :P

Ryan Langley

Laughed out loud at Henry referring to Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood as "That Tigerkid Show". Very fortysomething. Great ep as always.

aw yeah, time for that nostalgia driven serotonin boost

I truly enjoy every episode y'all put out, but it was extra great to wake up to a WAC about a childhood favorite today. One of my earliest memories is waking up on a Saturday, feeling the extreme disappointment of sleeping through Muppet Babies, only to be immediately relieved that I hadn't slept through Garfield and Friends! Also, yesterday I was writing a sketch and needed a funny name, and immediately thought "Roy!" An hour later I thought "Aw, crap. I just copied that from the Simpsons." But no! Turns out I copied it from Garfield and Friends! Regardless, as far as comedy staples go, though "Roy" is the name version of "ham." On a related note, the best "Onion" headline of all time is still 2012's "Taylor Swift Apparently Now Dating 'Garfield' Creator Jim Davis" and I will die on that hill.
