Talking Simpsons - I Married Marge With Chris Kohler

We welcome back our friend/video game historian Chris Kohler, as we take a trip through parenthood AND the early 1980s! Yes, this week we learn how Homer married Marge, as well as how Bart was born, how Homer got his job, and tons more in this classic ep full of memorable '80s trivia worth explaining. We'd tell you more about this podcast, but we don't want to be a "Mr. Blow-The-Podcast-for-Me" type!

I don't have the means to find the original strip but I'm 84% positive that the entire name association gag came from a Life in Hell strip, because I was a fan before The Simpsons ever aired and I remember reading that joke. It also stood out to me because there WAS a kid named Marcus in my grade and reading that strip made me realize his name was kinda funny. Also, there's an old SNL skit that has very similar energy featuring the one and only Nicolas Cage: https://youtu.be/goPerp_BWvs

Hearing Lisa suggest naming the new girl “Ariel” reminded me of my own family, and how my sister was named after a cartoon character. While I was named after my mom’s two grandfathers (first and middle name), my sister was given the name “Ariel” by my father. However, she was born the year before Disney’s The Little Mermaid premiered. My dad actually got the name from Princess Ariel of Thundarr the Barbarian.

When I was an ignorant child, I thought Homer's shirt was some sort of crass gag about shooting MLK Jr. (the only prominent "JR" in my worldview at that point). Thankfully, my dad set me straight immediately.

This episode contains the first of two Supertramp references on the show. The other is Martin saying that the next caller will win Supertramp tickets in Bart’s Inner Child. Super curious who on staff was so obsessed with them.

Yeesh, that alternate name talk gave me PTSD to my high school days. My full name is Wungavu Tashmon Dimps (the same name as my father), and all my life I've gone by that middle name, Tashmon. As you can imagine, having the winning combination of a prefered middle name and it being uniquely Swahili in origin made the introduction to every school year a pain. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!

Watching this now as a 26-year-old is weird, given that it specifically places Homer & Marge at 24. I think it's the first time I've seen an episode of them as ADULTS where I'm now older than they are. Obviously, this is not as insane as what Bob and Henry are feeling as they passed Homer's oldest "present day" age (so far), but given that I was born at the tale end of season 7, it still feels odd to me. When I turned 24, I had recently gotten my master's degree, but was also in the early days of the COVID pandemic, so I was very jobless and had way too much free time, and was going through a rough one. So, in terms of Homer's living situation with Barney, I feel like I was still doing better than him (despite living with my parents still), but seeing that Homer gets married and has a kid, I feel weird. OBVIOUSLY people on average do those things later in life now (if at all), so it's a generational thing, but I was recently single and evidently having less sex than Homer... which is a strange place to be at.

I named my daughter Scarlett, which I thought was a safe unique choice until there was another Scarlett in her preschool and she had to use her last initial.

my dad did almost the exact thing homer did with the first star wars sequel. i called him and told him i was going to see the movie, literally his first response was "oh i saw that, i couldnt believe when han solo [...]!"

In addition to taking shots at Kool Moe Dee, Mama said knock you out was also a response to critics in general who thought LL didn't have what it took to remain relevant in the ever changing landscape of Hip-Hop. By the time MSKYO was released, Gangsta Rap was the focus, so people/critics questioned if LL could keep up. Keep up he did, to critical acclaim. He would continue to be a mainstream staple and go at the least gold into 2006, while still staring in hit movies and TV.

I can't remember if I said this on the podcast but I think it's a parody of Gas -N- Go

I’m sorry, Henry, but I’m pretty sure that the “blow” in Gulp’n’Blow is meant to refer to “blow chunks* #quoteyFingers #KelseyGranmerVoice

The moment with Homer blurting out Empire Strikes Back spoilers kinda happened with me: I remember coming out of Rogue One in 2016 with my mum and sister, excitedly talking about that film's climax, specifically the scene with Darth Vader in the hallway... before I stopped myself, instantly reminded of that scene from this episode.
