2023-02-14 02:36:29 +0000 UTCCoincidentally, Dr. Zoidberg has a cameo in the Rich Moore-directed Duck Dodgers cartoon from that batch of 2003 Looney Tunes. The conversation about the delightfully dated quality of the superhero parodies in this episode made me realize that I really don't know what a superhero parody looks like these days. The most recent one I've seen is the episode of Amphibia that riffs on the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, and even that feels intentionally outdated at this point.

I am the self-confessed "toy boy" round here so of course I collected the Futurama toyline from 2007ish and on. I didn't get that deep into it though because the quality wasn't great. The first wave included a piece of the Robot Devil in each box so if you bought them all you could put him together. The head of the devil-bot I got had some nasty gouge in the temple area and one of the horns snapped off when I was trying to put the head on. The segmented limbs were also frail and he could barely stand and eventually just deteriorated before my very eyes. I sold most of them, keeping only Bender and Fry, and the one I got the most money for was my Universe B blue Zoidberg, which I think was a con-exclusive. It sounds like if I had held onto it longer I would have received more than the 100 bucks or whatever I got for him maybe 10 years ago. In the world of Futurama toys, I much prefer the more simple, and stylized, Kid Robot offerings. They (annoyingly) come blind-boxed, but they look good. And Bender even comes with a cigar! This obviously predates the 20th Century purchase by Disney as I assume any future Bender toy will sadly not come with any fine smoke-ables.

2023-02-13 18:18:55 +0000 UTCThis episode had a real “Anthology of Interest” vibe to me, in terms of plot, pacing, and character choices. It didn’t click for me as an “in-universe” episode, but mostly it makes me sad that they abandoned the AoI format.

2023-02-13 15:55:15 +0000 UTCon the subject of Alamo Drafthouse, coincidentally when I worked there 2014-2015, we actually played the 'New Justice Team' theme song sequence from this episode as part of our pre-show in front of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. I was only a wait staff/server so I didn't have the dream role of curating those clips per every movie, but it was fun to be able to go into each show and see the full playlist of what was chosen and deciphering their thematic ties to the movie.

It was never made as a war on terror analogy, and the cast, Sean Astin especially, HATED what the media did to relate the two. He even remarks on the commentary for Two Towers how much he hated it, to where he stopped saying and signing his name by any quote related to war. "White savior," sure, but LotR is anything BUT a war on terror analog
