Talk to the Audience?!? - May 2023

It's time for our monthly community podcast, which is great because we've got a ton to catch up on! We discuss the last handful of season 34 stories, including the 750th episode, plus a lot of talk of the WGA strike, Star Wars crossovers, and new Futurama. Not to mention we both have some exciting life updates too. Plus we reply to the many Patreon comments worthy of the First Annual Montgomery Burns Award For Outstanding Achievement In The Field Of Excellence!

Won’t the episodes already be written?

I bet God doesn't get recognized in public

We've journeyed straight through 'peak tv' into the much less exciting era of 'trough tv', where we each have multiple streaming accounts filled with (probably great) tv shows, which no one will commit to watching as the vast glut of options is too daunting, anxiety inducing and as such easier to just turn away from.. so much stuff is being or has been produced in the last five years, it'll take the rest of our lives to actually watch all of it. I spent a chunk of time in the doldrums of 2021 working remotely on the Nevers s02 and it NEVER came out! was written off by WB, dropped from max and sold to the trough streamers, so to see my work the only options are the semi-illegal practice of using a VPN service, or the fully-illegal practice of torrenting.. when I worked in the games industry there was always the chance a project could be cancelled as late in the piece as gold-master, but I never thought a hotly anticipated show or film could be cancelled.. Make sure and check out Blue Ruin the spiritual prequel to Green Room, and skip Hold the Dark, as it is surprisingly dull.

Being recognized in public makes me feel like God must feel when HE'S holding a gun!

Hey there, wasn't rude at all as it's always a pleasant surprise to get recognized. We managed to get the condo in your area, so feel free to say hi again when you inevitably bump into us again (and apologies in advance if we don't recognize you immediately in return)!!

I feel like I got a callout on this episode. I spotted Bob and Nina on what turned out to be Bob's birthday! I love the description of the two of you as "the most different looking people ever." I hope it wasn't rude of me to say hi to you on the street. I've been a fan/patron for a long time and this is the only Patreon I subscribe to so I just wanted to say how grateful I am for the countless hours of entertainment you've provided me over the years. Thank you so much :) Congrats on the new condo. Newcondo forever! And good luck to both of you with the moves.

On the subject of now-deceased celebrities being a fan of the Simpsons: Years ago I went through a Carl Sagan fanboy phase and read two biographies of him released after he passed away. One of them, when discussing his writings on how crass pop culture had gotten by the 1990s, mentioned him singling out the Simpsons in a George HW Bush-esque manner. (Weird to think how liberal elite opinion could overlap with the right in that era, I'm picturing Frasier being disgusted at watching FOX) However, the other biography included a memory from Sagan's daughter about how much he loved watching the show with her and appreciated its satire! I choose to believe the former was just him trying to reach a word count for Parade Magazine, the latter is a solid source. Sagan would've obviously loved Lisa!

Billy West was also at that most recent Fleischer event. A trifecta of royalty for sure. Good luck on the moves to both of you.

Should we throw a, "So long, stink town!" party for the hosts in Berkeley?

Just be glad 4/20 is still about weed and not the other thing!

Youtube premium is indeed well worth it. And you can get it dirt cheap

So excited for TMNT!

Really glad Bob enjoyed Dragon Ball! Can’t wait for his thoughts on Z eventually. Its funny that he joked that you can’t color Popo differently when they did exactly that for the CW 4kids airing of Kai to the surprise of me and my friends the morning after our big slumber party. Look up Blue Popo on Google for a laugh or two.

No, I think you're correct. Cartoon Brew lists them as still being a WGA show. For some reason I had it in my head that most streaming animation wasn't covered and fell under the Animation Guild.

Joe Hodgson

Unless I’m horribly mistaken, Futurama should still be a WGA show

Bob Mackey

I don't think the writer's strike would impact Futurama as the animation writer's guild is separate and not striking. Unless there is a bunch of cross-pollination on the writing staff that could make things messier, but I'm guessing your assumption is accurate and the season is just being split up. You don't know the pain of no voice acting in Pokémon until you have a kid that can't read, but loves Pokémon. I had to read everything to my son from Let's Go Pikachu and Sword/Shield which was so tedious. You could argue I should just enjoy spending time gaming with my son, and I did. We played Let's Go Pikachu together in its entirety as it did feature a co-op element, but when you have to read a Pokémon game aloud to someone you really notice how much of the dialogue is just inconsequential and boring. Now I see him playing the new games and he just mashes the button through most exchanges rather than take the time to read it. I guess he had a similar takeaway to me. Barry was tremendous. No spoilers - but I loved how they chose to end it. And I love that it's a half hour show and even the finale is under 40 minutes. It really helps to balance out the tension as those hour long shows with a similar format can feel too intense for me. It's why I've never dived into Better Call Saul as I think Breaking Bad took years off my life. All of this sperm talk has me wanting to see what the cover of Metallica's "Load" looks like in the Springfield universe.

Wikisimpsons did the work of identifying all 750 characters in the opening for those that are curious. https://simpsonswiki.com/wiki/Homer%27s_Adventures_Through_the_Windshield_Glass/Gags

Brian Hortin

On your last episode when you were talking about curvaceous marge throughout season fourteen. it shouldn't be a surprise we've been seeing Marge and Homer getting it on for years since the start of season 2 or 3. It practically birthed rule 34 art
