Talking Simpsons - Marge on the Lam With Matt Bors and Ben Clarkson
Added 2024-12-04 05:00:07 +0000 UTC
As Marge and Ruth battle the police state, we welcome back experts in satirizing dumb cops, Matt Bors and Ben Clarkson, creators of the comic Justice Warriors (the new volume 2, Vote Harder, makes a great seasonal gift)! After reflecting on this story in the current post-election climate, learn how Thelma And Louise inspired this ep, why good waffles stick together, and how to balance parenting with watching Simpsons reruns constantly. Plus, the history of sunshine, lollipops, and everything that's wonderful on this podcast!

Gonna have to disagree on the characterization of Pamela Reed's performance as Ruth. I think she brings the perfect tone for the character. She's low energy because she's a single mom getting screwed over by her ex. When she cuts loose with Marge there is a slight uptick in her energy, but it's in the form of a "cool" energy, nothing manic. I think Bob put it well when he described her as a real person amongst a bunch of cartoon characters. I actually wish she was included more as I always wanted another glimpse at the Marge/Ruth dynamic. Marge (and Lisa) needs friends!

Squirthead checking in. Regarding Marge's politics, there's a line in the Tapped Out game where she says she's voting for Trump, and then in one of the Trump shorts she's appalled when Homer does the same.

Just came across late-60s “Dragnet” episodes on FETV. Looking forward to seeing some hippies get whomped

Not related to this episode, but here's Matt Groening on Letterman in 1990 for anyone interested. 😁

Thanks to a combination of MeTV and insomnia, I have seen most of Dragnet's late-60s run, and I'm more than happy to clear a few things up for you. Blue Boy and the marijuana addicted parents with the drowned kid are indeed two separate episodes. Also, as far as I can tell, Rob Reiner was never a guest star, although he did famously play a hippie on Gomer Pyle: USMC (do yourselves a favor and look up the clip of him singing "Blowin' in the Wind" with Jim Nabors).
Anywho, Dragnet really is a fascinating show. There are multiple, unrelated episodes that revolve around arresting people for selling fake magazine subscriptions. Truly exciting stuff.

Huh, I had no idea Royal Farms was based in Maryland! Neat, I find their fried chicken okay.

Umbrella Academy was notorious for (among other things) its overuse of incredibly on the nose music cues, swear to god by about halfway through it was happening just about every episode.

I've been listening for 2 years now, and done plenty of diving into the back catalogue. This is the first episode that felt like a slog to get through. I'll just say it wasn't because of the hosts.

The guy who’s designed to look like David Mirkin in this episode also appeared earlier in season 3’s “Colonel Homer”, as one of the barflies in the redneck bar who fights with the other (the line was “hey you, let’s fight!”). Did the Simpsons staff know David Mirkin back in production season 3?

Marylander here chiming in to we have a lot more state foods than just crab! There are also Berger cookies, Smith Island cake, delicious pit beef, and Coddies! (And of course Old Bay seasonjng but I despise that.)

Great episode and discussion, but it'd be nice if Bob and Henry pushed back a little more when the guest just keeps making incredibly dumb points. Pamela Reed isn't trying or doing a good job? Marge doing target practice on cans is a rip-off of... Steve Martin being shot at and thinking the sniper is trying to shoot cans? This isn't a podcast where someone says something incendiary and then everyone argues with them, but Ben really seemed to want to make it one.

Here is what appears to be all of 60’s Dragnet. Not legal I’m sure, but it’s been up for 4-5 years. I doubt anyone will take it down. https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLaxjNkxp1Fh8B2SMgFfwSGIhU_F6cW7H6&si=KthkW5sPQIjjkLe8

Has the word "lollipop" featured in a song that hasn't been used for comedic purposes?
Serious-ish question. 😁

Had to chime in that I unironically love Sunshine, Lollipops, and Rainbows. Lesley Gore ruled and while it's a very goofy song, it is incredibly catchy. Its use in this episode is perfect, too, especially the callback where Wiggum is into it.

Great episode! A few quick thoughts I had:
This episode gave us one of my favorite Simpsons memes: Springfield Rally Championship! I love the effort that went into this one. https://youtu.be/wm3R2ypn1fk?si=-eI0TJJIChzWXSQb
The NBA championship trophy is called the Larry O'Brien trophy, named after former US Postmaster General (and NBA commissioner) Larry O'Brien. It's a gold basketball on top of a little podium thingy. It's fine, just doesn't have the cultural cache of the Stanley Cup.
And last, Bob briefly mentioned nuts in soda, and I'm surprised southern boy Henry didn't bring up peanuts and Coke, such a beloved snack that it has it's own Wikipedia page! It's exactly what it sounds like, salted peanuts poured into a bottle of Coke. Kind of a sweet and salty thing. It's good! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peanuts_and_Coke

Homer's "blue hair? what a freak!" line is burned into my brain FOREVER, and since I've had blue hair myself at periods in my life (including currently), it is something I think about and say A LOT. This is a fantastic, fantastic episode, just wall to wall bangers and not a wasted second. It makes for a great podcast discussion too!

one of the more bizarre cliff notes in Garrison Keillor's storied history was voicing Odin in an episode of Disney's Hercules cartoon that often featured a rather odd Celebrity of the Week as a mythical character (Vince Vaughn was Loki in that same episode)
