Talking Simpsons - $pringfield With Nick Wiger
Added 2025-02-19 05:00:05 +0000 UTC
In an episode that's alternately titled "(or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Legalized Gambling)," we welcome back Nick Wiger from the podcasts Doughboys and Get Played! Armed with TWO different original scripts for the ep, we dig into all the details for this ode to Gamblor. How does Marge get addicted to gambling? Did this predict magician injuries? Are we all covered in disgusting germs? Was Robert Goulet's manager really named Vera? We've got all the answers in a podcast that's at least as funny as an injured Irishman!
When the Sea Captain gives his pitch & then says, "Can you give me five minutes?" I always felt that was an inside joke referencing Matt Groening's original LIFE IN HELL pitch to the Tracy Ullman producers. Because didn't he say, "Give me five minutes" then went into the other room & quickly sketched out the Simpsons?

Surprised that no one mentioned that this episode is the source of a major cultural change in the UK as to the song jingle bells - see Tom Scott's video https://youtu.be/V5u9JSnAAU4?si=DuDnGhRHYRjhtMw3

We have "Skill Machines" at just about every bar and convenience store in PA and everytime I play one, I refer to it as giving homage to Gamblor.

Oh boy, Christmas of '93 was a big one. The video game at the top of my list was the recently released Mortal Kombat for Sega Genesis. Not Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis as we all knew it had the blood code. My problem going into that Christmas though was that just the year before I got a SNES for Christmas. I didn't think I had any chance of actually getting a Genesis just one year removed from that milestone but working in my favor was that my dad moved us from NH to Virginia and back in that timeframe. We were living with my grandparents, and because my dad's old job really needed him to stay on, they doubled his salary temporarily and he lived in VA while we lived in MA that summer. I think there was a guilt factor involved in that Christmas which worked in my favor. It was actually my grandmother who bought me the game and soon felt regret when it was on the evening news for its violence. She didn't take it away though and I was King of Winter since no one else in my neighborhood was able to get the game.

Strangely enough, Robert Goulet was ALSO attacked by a large cat (an escaped lion) in the Naked Gun 2 and a Half.

As for why it didn't stick around, I can't debunk Disney's involvement, but it was a premium game (essentially rented to casinos) with a lot of competition, and it's metrics were only ever OK, if you can believe it. It's just as likely it was naturally phased out by more popular games like the 100th Willy Wonka slot machine that was inexplicably popular.

I actually worked on the Simpsons slot machine and I wanted to share some behind the scenes about that. It was supposed to be a 7 (I think) game contract but for reasons I'll get to, it was only the one. We wanted to start with a classic Simpsons themed one but Gracie films insisted on the casino themed one. They also kept rejecting every submission of the game kept giving us pages of notes, at which point we would change nothing and submit it again next month only to get completely different notes. When we threatened to sue Gracie because they wouldn't let us release the game, the contract for multiple games was dissolved and they let us release the one that was done. It was such an ordeal and because of it there will probably never be another one.

Damn, I guess weโre finally so far removed from TSโs humble beginnings that the old Gerry Cooney Talking Simpsons soundbite wasnโt mentioned. I canโt believe how long Iโve been with you guys.

I didn't think "Vera said that" could possibly get funnier and then BAM! Second encore.

I've seen this episode many many times and I just noticed on this rewatch that when homer is dealing blackjack his card count 18, 27, 35. There is no card in blackjack worth 12 so homer is even being a terrible dealer to himself.
Also, Arnold dropped out of the hanz and Franz movie because after the last action hero flopped he didn't want to attach himself to another meta film. Conan did a script reading on his podcast with Dana carvey, Kevin neelan and Robert smigel as arnold. Arnold would have done the podcast reading but sadly he was busy.

Freemasons are still around! I used to be acquaintances with a member of the order by way of us both being in a cosplay charity group. He would post occasionally about meetings/promotions at his Masonic Temple on facebook.
Also! The batcave set from Batman Forever and Batman and Robin was built in the Spruce Goose hangar while it was being used as a sound stage.

I think that "escaped lunatic dressed as Santa" joke was a nod to Tales From the Crypt. It was a story in the comics that was adapted in the 70s movie and later in the HBO series.
