Talking Simpsons - Homer and Apu With Mike Mitchell

"Silly customer! You cannot hurt a Twinkie!" - Apu Nahasapeemapetilon

Apu receives a well-deserved spiritual depantsing when he knowingly sells Homer tainted meat and ends up in the unemployment line. But with the help of his oafish friend, and benevolent Hollywood superstar James Woods, he may find himself back in the good graces of the Kwik-E-Mart corporation.

Our guest: Mike Mitchell, co-host of the Doughboys podcast

Talking Simpsons - Homer and Apu With Mike Mitchell

Comments

My partner feels seen knowing that Mike also has issues with pupcorn lolll. Also I appreciate Mike questioning the Simpsons house layout for them to cheat the tv room to the dining room window.

Skinner's Toupee is canon. Bart takes it from Skinner in "Bart the Bad Guy" and Skinner is seen removing it in "One Angry Lisa"

We used to have a gas station chain called Kum & Go. I used to chuckle every morning as I’d drive by. That chain turned to Loaf & Jug locally. I hardly ever laugh at that name.

Love that Henry likes turka daal it’s my favorite vegetarian curry and im Indian incase you can’t tell

Felt a bit disappointed by this one on rewatch. Haven't listened to the episode but feels indicative of later Simpsons with a 3rd act weird plot swerve and a fawning guest star b plot.

9 AM on a Sunday morning is the deadest, and therefore best, time to shop at Market Basket.

I already posted this! No, wait... I *meant* to post it. 😋

"I was unaware! I WAS UNAWARE!" was subconsciously entered into my lexicon as a child when I'd watch the syndicated episodes ad nauseam and I say it a lot when then situation calls for it. I forgot that it came from this episode so I was very pleased to hear it again. I haven't watched this season in many years so listening to the best lines again really tickles the brain.

Also kinda in that vein, the fantastapotamus.

We still have a regional grocery chain in MA called Market Basket that's still pretty old-fashioned in their business model. They hire baggers, no self-checkout, dress code, and so on. Working from home made me think that the optimal time to shop would be during the day, but no. Oh no. That's when the elderly take to the stores and, while I love our seniors and hope to be one someday, they love to just stop in the middle of aisles, have conversations everywhere, and definitely talk-up the cashier. I have learned to avoid the double whammy when it's an elderly customer and an older cashier because that line is going to move at a crawl. Evening rush might actually be the best time to shop because it's all people who just got out of work and many just need a few items for dinner. They're tired, no chit-chat welcomed, everyone just wants to go home.

I don't think this was brought up, but is there a reason Apu is wearing the light blue shirt with stripes this episode and never any other time? Is that the official Kwik-e-Mart uniform? Wow, there's a lot of iconic scenes/jokes in this episodes! Loved Mike Mitchell offering his point of view!

I think the first Simpsons musical scene (meaning not an in-story performance but characters bursting into a non-diegetic song number) is the "Hey, Brother, Pour the Wine" scene from Season 1 Episode 4 "There's No Disgrace Like Home". You might make the distinction that the Apu song here is the first original musical scene.

Yes. Recording with us cost him $30 in pocket change

Mich with millhouse calling in at barts birthday vibes

I always felt like the hollywood actors are apart of this secret world where movie things are real was a bit of a runner. In a fish named selma, i took McClure asking if his agent meant the movie or the planet for planet of the apes as apart of this with Woods going to another planet

Andrew

James Woods is a truly reprehensible piece of human garbage, but there can be no denying this is the greatest non-Albert Brooks guest appearance in series history. Sunrise, sunset.

elderly shoppers these days are talking to the one person overseeing the 8 self checkout lines, preventing me from paying for my beer

To answer Bob's question of who will old people talk to while checking out, budtenders. The answer is Budtenders. You would have to be nice, tell them you heard what was on Hunter Biden's laptop, and send them home with their gummies.

I have nostalgic memories of this episode because me and my younger sister recorded ourselves watching the episode and with our reactions (audio commentary) - I kinda want to look for that for laughs 😆

Michael Recon

That alternate ending would a hard no! Glad they kept it with the second hug at the end

Michael Recon

I don’t remember that wig deleted scene - let me YouTube that

Michael Recon

They missed the mark with not inputting the deleted scene where they are watching the Bollywood movie on the TV - it was funny I thought.

Michael Recon

did mitch call in on a payphone? 😂

I think they could have fixed the Apu situation with just balancing him out with more diverse middle eastern characters. The show Atlanta is a great example of showing POCs that run the full spectrum. Which is realistic.

FYI chicken tikka Masala was invented in Glasgow - Scotland to apprise the white man who wanted a “gravy” with his chicken tikka .the chef mixed tinned tomato 🍅 soup with cream i believe . You could say it the national dish of the U.K. even more than fish and chips

I agree with Mike’s “It sucks that he’s so good in this episode.” I would place James Woods in my top Simpsons guest stars—maybe right under Albert Brooks? Just think of how many voice roles he’d be perfect for if he didn’t have to be his awful self.
