as an amateur filmmaker/writer, I always try to analyze series I enjoy from a writer/filmmaker/showrunner perspective - and its clear the writers for each season had a white board and said 'whos the big-bad for each season, and we have to make sure they have a personal connection or personal plot point connecting to Dexter himself" (which justifies why he feels HE has to put them down himself) -- S1: his brother Brian, S2 his mistress/sponsor Lila, S3: his short term best friend with a similar darkness, S4: trinity who eventually kills his wife Rita, S5: his dark partner in crime/love, Lumen and the men who hurt her, S6: eventually Travis kidnaps Harrison, S7: Hannah- dexters true love of his life (because she loves the real him and vice versa), S8: the brain surgeon who is after the psychiatrist that dexter knew most of his childhood, New Blood: The Hunter

What annoys me about dexter is I feel like he started out just killing murderers who got away.. now he's going out of his way to make just the police never catch travis because he's obsessed with killing him himself. If only he would just let the police do their job or help them travis could have been caught before anything else happened.
