David Ayer doesn't mess around. This movie is so underrated that it won an award for being underrated. You're right, without that extra scene at the end it would have been such a dark way to end a movie - I mean it is dark, but it helps a little bit with the overall tone. In my head cannon, the guy who was also in Training Day is the same character, and it's not totally ridiculous - they both have pseudonyms for character names.. I remember at the time being a bit annoyed because I thought Michael Peña deserved a nod, he's so good in this, he's one of those actors known for comedies but in a serious movie massively outperforms expectations and you wish they did more serious movies - Steve Carell is another one of those, his performance in The Big Short is incredible.
