Rent (2005)

The Manchurian Candidate was a 1959 novel and film made shortly after about a brainwashed operative that can be activated like Barnes here. Denzel was in a 2004 remake!

I got to work on RENT as a stunt guy, and worked with Wilson Heredia (Angel) during the riot scene. Several years later, we worked together again when he played Lancelot on the San Fransisco Playhouses production of CAMELOT, where I was the Fight Choreographer. There were seven sword fights, where Wilson did four of them … one using two swords. He’s such an athletic guy. When Wilson did the Broadway production of RENT, he won the Tony Award. For CAMELOT, he won Best Actor, and I won for Best Fight Choreography. He told me that the award for CAMELOT meant more to him than the Tony. We still keep in touch — Great reaction … Cheers.

Also, yes, Idina Menzel is the voice of Elsa in Frozen and she was the original voice of Elphaba (in "Wicked") on Broadway. She won a Tony Award for this. She also played Maureen in "Rent" when it came to Broadway, and she earned a Tony Award for her performance in Rent, as well.

Fun facts: "Rent" the movie came out in 2005, while the musical first hit Broadway in 1996. It's very directly based on "La Bohème," a famous opera by Giacamo Puccini from 1896. While the story changes slightly (from tuberculosis to HIV/AIDS; from Paris to NYC), the themes of impoverished artists, love, disease, community, gentrification, etc. remain the same. In French, "La Bohème," literally means "The Bohemian." It's not referring to Boho chic or the actual people from the Bohemia region of the world - it's referring to the lifestyle of artists, writers, musicians, wanderers who live unconventional, free-spirited and often poverty-stricken lives. Puccini wanted to convey that these people live passionately and for the moment, despite living lives of constant struggle and uncertainty. The song "La Vie Boheme" in Rent is a nod to the original opera. There's even a line in it that says "...that doesn't remind us of Musetta's Waltz." That's one of the famous songs in the opera (also known as "Quando me'n vo'").

there are some fantastic musical adaptions out there in movies: Hairspray, Little Shop of Horrors, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Oliver!, Sound of Music. All great music despite the completely different styles.

Thank you for watching 😭 I've been obsessed with this film since it came out. I'm probably in the minority here, but it's the only musical where I prefer the movie over the stage production... Interesting, because this is almost entirely the original cast. Tracie (Joanne) is a masterclass. Anthony Rapp (Mark) is always brilliant. There's not a bad actor/musician in the bunch. (Yes, Taye Diggs was singing) But Maureen was right... Everyone falls in love with Idina Menzel. What an extraordinary talent! She was also the original Elphaba in Wicked and owned that role so much that I refuse to watch the film. But yes, RENT is such an important cultural milestone and brings so much awareness to real problems like poverty, homelessness, addiction, sexuality, HIV/AIDS, and LOVE. Please also note that this year, 2025, is the first year that the US declined to acknowledge World AIDS Day and funding for prevention and treatment of the disease has been slashed and - in some places - eliminated. This is a disease that has killed more than 44 million people around the world and is still very much present in the world. Talk to people who lived through the epidemic of the 80s. I have friends/mentors who buried a friend every day. The stigma and oppression for those suffering and the ignorance of the disease led to bodies literally being disposed of in dumpsters. So much tragedy and heartbreak. Thanks again for watching ❤️ Happy new year to you both!

That was lovely to watch with you guys! Now I’m taking my tear stained swollen face to brunch!!
