Chapter 44

"Sure, let's go then," you said, standing up. "Mr. Nelson, it was a pleasure meeting you," you added with a smile as you extended your hand.

"No, the pleasure is ours, Mr. Watson. It's not every day that you get to meet a billionaire, and maybe you can consider our firm for your own needs in the future," he said with a smile as he shook your hand, "Sure" you reply.

"It was a pleasure meeting you too, Mr. Murdock," you said, extending your hand.

"Matt, he is extending his hand in front of you," Foggy whispered from the side.

"Oh, sorry," Matt said embarrassedly as he extended his own hand, which you caught and gave a polite shake. "Mr. Watson, I have a question that is eating me up, if you don't mind me asking," he said, holding your hand.

"Sure, go ahead," you replied with a smile.

"How did you know about our firm?" he asked curiously, his head slightly down, his red spectacles reflecting your face in one of the glasses.

"We have a mutual friend, Mr. Matt—Skye. You both went to the same Saint Agnes Orphanage," you said with a simple smile.

"Oh, Skye," Matt said in surprise, taking back his hand. "I haven't heard that name in years. Yeah, there was this little girl who had made up that name for herself in the orphanage. It's surprising that she still remembered me; I had hardly talked with her, and the last I heard, she was adopted by some family when she was very young," Matt asked in surprise.

"Well, we have this Watson Aid Network, and when I first established it, Skye had recommended the name of her senior at the orphanage who had suffered from an unfortunate accident," you replied and continued, "But I was surprised to find that her senior was studying law at Columbia University with a scholarship. So, you can say that I've kept my eyes on you on you since then, no pun intended," you replied with a chuckle.

"Well, that explains everything. I should maybe get in touch with Skye, thank her for still remembering me," Matt replied with a smile of his own as your face is reflected in both of his red glasses.

"Yes, she will definitely like that. In fact, I will tell her that you wanted to get in touch with her. She will surely come here to meet her senior when she has time," you said simply, and Matt nodded his head in agreement.

You were not sure if he had figured out the small lie you had told, but you didn't mind either way.

You gave both of them the address of the apartment where Karen would be staying and then took the three ladies away in your car.

Matt and Foggy had come down to see you off and Foggy expresses his surprise. "He seems like a genuinely nice guy. But I still can't believe that we just met a billionaire," he says as he watches the red Tesla drive away.

"Me too, Foggy, me too," Matt agreed, his brows knitted as he faced the direction of the moving car.

"Hey, don't be so serious. Even if we have two tough cases as our first, at least we're getting paid for one of them. And it's Lucas Watson; I don't think he'll be stingy with money. Who knows, we might even see some bonuses," Foggy said with a happy smile, clapping Matt on the shoulder. "Let's go celebrate a bit tonight, drinks on me"

"I'm busy tonight," Matt replied simply.

"Oh, a date? Tell me about her. Does she look as good as that Karen?" Foggy asked curiously.

Matt just ignored him and walked ahead.

"Hey, tell me!" Foggy followed after his blind friend.

Inside the Tesla, you noticed that Karen, Cassie, and Maggie were staying quiet, none taking the initiative to talk.

To break the tension and noting that it was already lunchtime, you proposed taking them out for lunch. Karen protested a bit, but when you mentioned she probably hadn't eaten since the previous night, Cassie and Maggie quickly joined in persuading her.

You took them to a private villa, a high-class restaurant catering to just a select few clientele. There, you had a private room reserved for yourselves, allowing the two women and the girl to experience fine dining today.

The food was exquisite, allowing them to taste a variety of dishes. When Maggie asked for the prices of the dishes, you simply laughed it off. After all, if they knew the prices, they might not enjoy the food as care-freely.

During dinner, Cassie kept asking Karen questions about her earlier outburst. In the end, Karen relented and told them a watered-down version of her problems. Even that made the mother-daughter pair emotional. Cassie then shared her own problems with Karen, eliciting sympathy from the woman.

After that lunch, they were definitely closer to each other. Cassie learned that Karen had no clothes or money on her, so she wanted to go shopping. You agreed and took them to a mall.

You also told Cassie, Maggie, and Karen that they could buy anything they wanted. Cassie was happy and excited, while Maggie and Karen both disagreed with you.

You whispered into Maggie's ear, reminding her that after that night she was yours now. She was shy and denied your statement, but still agreed to your offer of you paying for her things.

You just told Karen that it was fine if she didn't want to buy stuff, as if she didn't choose it herself, then Cassie would choose clothes for her, and she would definitely make her whole wardrobe pink then.

Karen nodded defeatedly and you shopped for hours. They still didn't take much until the end, mostly some daily necessities for Karen and 2-3 pairs of new clothes for each of them.

At the checkout, you glanced at the bill with disappointment—it was an amount you earned in minutes. When they asked why you were shaking your head, you told them the same and they looked in disbelief, not believing you.

Afterward, you all headed to the food court for dinner as Cassie wanted ice cream. You enjoyed burgers, fries, and ice cream together, and by the time you left the mall at 8 pm, exhaustion had set in, with Cassie falling asleep in the car.

You dropped Karen off first at her new apartment. You hadn't fully disclosed that you owned the entire building, but since there were other tenants and the top floor was vacant, it technically did not count as a lie.

You helped her move her belongings into the fully furnished apartment, ensuring she felt settled and secure in her new environment.

"Thank you, Luke," she said, hugging you tight and looking at you with a heartfelt smile. "Today was both my worst day and my best day. If I hadn't met you, I would have never imagined you were so down to earth and good," she said with a happy expression.

"Well, we're friends now, so get used to it," you said with a smirk.

"Who would believe when I tell them that my first friend in this big city is the Billionaire Lucas Watson?" she chuckled.

"They will believe when you show them this," you said, giving her a card with a limit of just a grand on it.

"No, this is too much," she protested, pushing it back.

After some back and forth, she accepted the card hesitantly when you told her that this card costed way less than the dishes they had this afternoon.

"Well, if I had not known any better, a girl might start thinking that you are interested in her," she said, looking at you shyly.

"Well, the girl would be correct then," you said, meeting her gaze.

"Luke... r-right now, I have too m-" Karen starts hesitatingly, looking away from your eyes.

You take a step closer to her and kiss her on the cheek. "I know," you said simply. "I'll wait for you then, Karen," you said with a charming smile as you turn your back to her and left.

She looked at your retreating figure with a red face, holding the card in her hand with a helpless sigh.

You leave the apartment and drive Maggie and Cassie to Aunt Cass's house. Unfortunately, Aunt Cass isn't home yet; she's probably still closing her coffee shop.

They both hug you tightly and thank you, with both the mother and daughter whispering how they'll meet you alone soon to thank you properly.

Internally, you smirk but maintain a polite smile as you leave the house.

You then drive towards Hell's Kitchen again.

"D.A.I.S.Y., where is Matt right now?" you ask aloud as you drive.

You knew some bits about Karen's story, which were similar to her story in the Daredevil series of your previous world, but she was not present on your Index. Whatever she said, you had to take at face value as you had no surveillance on her.

This was because, you had to reduce the load on D.A.I.S.Y. due to the extensive number of individuals on the Index and the stringent monitoring of high-priority figures. Monitoring all this data constantly poses a storage challenge, so you had to remove many inconsequential characters like Karen and Foggy from the list. As they are merely Matt's friends, they don't warrant continuous surveillance.

Maybe you should finish your plans of updating D.A.I.S.Y. as after it is done, she will be able to handle much more data easily.

Matt, however, was a different story. You had liked his character a lot in your last life and you still do, so he is very high up in your Index.

"He is getting out of the church right now" D.A.I.S.Y. showed you a video in front of you of Matt leaving the church.

Looking at the quality of video and the overhead view, you deduced that the Swarm must be operational now.

As the car went into Auto drive mode, with D.A.I.S.Y. taking control, you checked the status of all the 100 Micro Satellites on your phone. As you reviewed the data, you looked up and saw Matt climbing a pipe in a dark alley and going to the roof. He then proceeded to remove his clothes, revealing black clothes underneath, and put on a bandana.

"Well, let's go and have a meet with the Devil then," you said with a smirk as your car reached Hell's Kitchen.
