Steven Universe S2 EPs 1 & 2 REACTION + REVIEW (Full Uncut)

Comments

I don't think any of the teens were using him to any capacity. Remember, they were trying to get him to hangout since they saw him shoveling in the beach. From their perspective, they are all teens who have pressure from their families, and they've already established themselves and steven as friends since Lars and the cool kids. It's not a stretch for them to easily realize steven is doing work, and it's related to what his gem family is doing, even if they don't actually know what that is. (The ship was a fun surprise for them, that they both wanted to enjoy, and genuinely found as a good opportunity for Steven to let loose, especially after learning him actually describe his issues in greater detail) They do have typical teen perspectives, which kind of run counter to our expectations as the viewer knowing the responsibility that Steven has, and the importance of his task, which obviously the teens don't have. But that's sort of the point of the episode. The circumstances (and narrative) forces a problem that needs to be handled from a moral and pragmatic perspective (cleaning beach city from dangerous alien tech), but steven IS still just a child, something the teens have never lost sight of, even when the crystal gems might themselves occasionally. I do think peer pressure was part of this, though I doubt they intentionally used it so much as that's probably natural to them being 'cool kids' (just look at how lars acts around them of his own volition). Technically, interventions in real life are peer pressure (a rare positive example of it), and this felt sort of like a mini-intervention for steven to not have the burdens of earth protection on him 24/7 at his age especially. (Additionally, I want to point out the purposeful comparisons between the crystal gems and the cool kids, made evident when they all take pics of each other. (Garnet/Buck Dewey, Pearl/Sour Cream, Jenny/Amethyst) (Also, there was a lot going on in the car ride, so I wasn't sure if you caught all the familial references to the teens, specifically buck and sour cream, as jenny has already been seen with their family previously. Technically one of the other teens did as well at this point, but I think you missed that episode) Another thing I've noticed you pick up here and there, was steven's strength. One scene I love calling attention to is Steven picking up jenny and moving her away from the ship, like nothing. I loved Jenny's moment of surprise, and brief (but important) moment where she seemed at least a bit not ok with that ['You need to relax!' ,with her face sterner than usual towards steven, and even steven being sheepish at that moment] This is probably my favorite 'filler' episode, if it is considered one. Or at least, favorite Non-gem focused, non-greg, non-connie focused episode. To be fair, both Sour cream and Jenny won my heart early on as characters with their adamant seatbelt stance. How often do you see teens care so much about that, especially 'cool kids' ?
