This also sets up a few neat world building bits here. When the three mention how scary the Everfree Forest is, the reasons they give are "the plants grow...the animals care for themselves...and the clouds move...all on their own." Plants growing and even weather aren't natural to Equestria. If pegasi don't make it rain, it just doesn't rain. If they don't manually move clouds around, they just sit there. Plants only grow when tended by the earth ponies. It's an interesting world building idea.

Despite it very blatantly not being the case, since none of them even knew Zecora wasn't a pony till Twilight told them. Speaking of Best Zebra, so that language she was speaking in, the writers really wanted it to be authentic Swahili, but they couldn't fit hiring a professional translator into the budget for Season 1 and would rather just do gibberish then try to google translate it and risk screwing things up. On the budget issues, so Lauren's original idea for the show was that it would be an even mix of 'adventure' and 'slice of life' episodes, with Zecora's roll being to serve as a kind of second mentor to Twilight when it came to the adventure stuff and going out into the wilds, dealing with unknown creatures, etc... But since the adventure eps would be much more expensive to do, they had to cut way down on how many of them they did, leading to Zecora's role being diminished from what was intended. On the long term brony meme front, we have the arrival of Flutterguy!
