2025-05-21 21:08:37 +0000 UTCImo, Kai is the best if you want the story with no filler and as close to its original source material in English as possible. Funi Dub Z is for when you already know the story and just want an easy slow fun time. There are certain things that I prefer (18’s Funi Dub VA, Chuck’s far more monotone delivery as 17 in the old dub). I love both the Yamamoto and Faulconer score equally, not too big of a Kikuchi fan in Z but in OG DB forsure he’s peak.

2025-04-13 20:13:55 +0000 UTCOriginally, Funimation outsourced the dub to Ocean, so the version of the Saiyan saga and the first half of the Namek arc -until around halfway through the Ginyu Force - were produced by Funimation but is considered a separate Dub, the 'Ocean Dub.' This is the dub of the famous 'it's over 9,000' scene where he really drags out that "thousand." It also replaced death with "fading into another dimension" in all the dialogue. Most of the scenes that are super memorable from that dub come from Brian Drummand's unhinged Vegeta. I recommend reacting to the original "It's over 9,000" as well as the "Vegeta's Wrath" scenes, but other than that there's no need to seek out the Ocean Dub. I'll post Youtube links to those scenes at the end in case you want to check them out, but no pressure. Feel free to ignore them. When Funimation took over for real, the voice actors you know from Kai came in, and at first they tried to imitate the Ocean voice actors for a few episodes before settling into their own groove. Later, Funimation would go back and do their own dub of the beginning of Z, but this was several years after they had started. 2025-04-11 22:31:55 +0000 UTCThanks for doing this and putting it all together! I really appreciate it. I’d probably prefer Kai most of the time but the sheer highs that the Faulconer Funimation stuff reaches at it’s best is just the top and most affecting in my opinion. Can’t wait to see the rest of the sagas!!

2025-04-11 20:11:12 +0000 UTCIn the original dbz they kinda thought in order for kids to like goku hed have to be this superman type figure and want to be a hero, which led to a whole generation of young boys ending up liking vegeta more than goku lol, so they realized young boys just like fighting , so kai let goku be more like toriyamas intention which was a deeply flawed mountain kid who just likes to fight and saves people because he was raised to be pure hearted but hes still a saiyan at heart, So people more in my age range who grew up with kai love goku much more than the 90s kids

2025-04-11 16:34:12 +0000 UTCHere's my opinion / take - Kai is the best because it accurately adopts the manga - The other versions change a lot of lines which changes the series entirely (Why Goku spared Vegeta in the saiyan saga, the og dub makes it seem like Goku thought he was gonna become pure of heart etc when no lol Goku wanted that run back with a fellow saiyan) Another change is Goku changes from his more rough mean side to more of a superman figure in OG Dub (The speech for example makes it seem like Goku is the hero when he is but he's really just snapped and is furious like his lines in Kai reflect) I watched OG Dub first for anyone wondering, I had all the original VHS Tapes which I can't play cause who owns the thing to play it on anymore. For me OG Dub doesn't compare to Kai until far later on (I'm avoiding spoilers but M saga) My last point is filler cause that's the worst part of most old anime (Especially in DBZ when literally nothing happens for an episode)

2025-04-11 16:31:20 +0000 UTCI've just kinda accepted I'm never gonna see eye-to-eye with the Faulconer/Original Dub people. Call me a purist if you want, but when it comes to new fans, I want them to experience the genuine article, and what with the script changes/additions, the music/tonal difference and just overall quality, I could never in good conscience recommend the original Funimation Z dub.
