2025-06-16 17:49:14 +0000 UTCWe return to what made Cell such a standout villain in his introduction when Piccolo first fused with Kami - the fact that he alone of all villains doesn't necessarily need to be the most powerful to remain a threat. In that first fight with Piccolo he was also much weaker than his opponent, but between the mystery and creepiness factor of his first form, it did not matter that he was weaker. Here too, he remains in control despite being the weaker fighter because he was smarter than Trunks and instantly saw through the weakness of Trunks' form. The way he got rag-dolled by Vegeta in his 2nd form kind of ruined that aspect of his character, but it was restored here. Toriyama basically created the Shonen genre with Dragonball. So most hand-to-hand fighting anime are essentially following the template he created. YuYu Hakusho, Bleach, Naruto: Dragonball is to them what Superman is to American superhero comics. Some aspects of Dragonball can be seen in the Magical Girl genre starting with Sailor Moon, such as the escalating power of the villains and the flood of new transformations for the main character, but the emphasis is much less on hand-to-hand combat and training arcs there than in Shonen stories.

Perfect Cell is definitely more mellow compared to his previous forms. Still a villain, but he's just given our heros an opportunity for success on a silver plate!

Having the Trunks fight go simultaneously alongside Goku discovering SSJ Grade 3, is very smart in terms of dramatic irony. Showing off Goku’s battle IQ and making the audience aware of something that Trunks isn’t makes the fight so much more interesting. It spits in the face of “Dragon Ball is just about hur dur scream and get stronger.”
