Yes you're correct. In the manga, she had that symbol on her the entire time. WIT for some reason decided not to ever show it. MAPPA ended up animating season 4 which got to this point of the manga where they finally reveal the connection, so they showed it.

Apparently in original manga she had that symbol in her hand but the anime studio changed setting and Mappa returned to original settings so things got confused. Mikasa did not have the bandage in SE3 EP22 while Historia saying Mikasa never took the bandage off while she did.
