What caused Jean to rethink his plan of staying behind to join the Jeagerists and instead follow Hange and Mikasa? Go back and re-watch that intro of him fantasizing about the cushy life he wanted. Look at the woman he imagined as his wife and the mother of his child. I think that should answer the question. That and as Jean said to Hange, "I'm forever a Scout". And yes it was Armin who asked Eren the question of, "What if we try and talk?". To which Eren replied coldly with something to the effect of how the world sees them as devils that can turn into Titans and how the world wasn't wrong in that regard. Also the issue of not having enough time was part of the rebuttal because they knew that Marley was planning to take action against Paradis. This happened in the episode where Armin is talking to Annie while she was in the hardening crystal.
