Taking the risk: ep 6

Episode 6: Moral Boundaries

INT. ANA'S BASEMENT LAB - DAY - AFTER RETURN FROM JADE AND MORGAN'S UNIVERSE

The lab is bustling with activity. Ana sits at multiple monitors, scanning through dimensional readings while Dimitri examines their acquired materials under a microscope. Dimitri moves more carefully now, clearly still adjusting to her changed proportions.

Ana

"I think I found something interesting."

Dimitri looks up from her work, unconsciously adjusting her new sports bra, a necessity she's clearly still uncomfortable with.

Dimitri

"Define interesting."

Ana

(pointing to anomalous readings on screen)

"Look at these dimensional signatures. They're completely different from anything we've encountered."

Dimitri walks over, her gait slightly awkward as she navigates around equipment with her new body proportions.

Dimitri

(studying the data)

"These energy patterns... they're almost organic. Like the universe itself is alive."

Ana

"Exactly. And if we need to find weird materials for Jade and Morgan's list, this seems like the perfect place to look."

Dimitri

(hesitant)

"It could also be the perfect place to get ourselves killed."

Ana

"That's why I'm suggesting only a one-hour window. Just enough time to scout and grab anything useful, not enough to get trapped or run into serious trouble."

Dimitri considers this, then nods slowly.

Dimitri

"Safe approach. I like it."

Ana

"Three days to prepare?"

Dimitri

(checking their material list)

"Three days it is."

INT. BASEMENT LAB - THREE DAYS LATER - MORNING

Ana and Dimitri stand before the ring device, both wearing their upgraded jumpsuits and equipment packs. Dimitri fidgets uncomfortably, clearly struggling with how the suit fits her new figure.

Ana

(noticing Dimitri's discomfort)

"You okay?"

Dimitri

(frustrated)

"Everything feels wrong. The way I move, the way clothes fit... even running feels different now."

Ana

(sympathetically)

"We'll fix this. You know that, right?"

Dimitri

(forcing determination)

"Right. Let's focus on the mission."

Ana initiates the startup sequence. The ring device powers up with its familiar hum.

Ana

"One hour. In and out."

Dimitri

"And if this universe turns out to be hostile?"

Ana

"Then we run. Fast."

The void opens, larger and more stable than ever before. But something feels different - there's an almost organic quality to the portal's edges.

Dimitri

(uneasily)

"Does that look normal to you?"

Ana

(checking readings)

"Define normal. But the readings are stable."

They exchange a look, then step through together.

EXT. ALIEN CITYSCAPE - DAY

Ana and Dimitri materialize in what appears to be an abandoned corner of a massive city. The architecture is familiar yet wrong - buildings that look almost human but with subtle organic curves and materials that seem to shift color in the light.

The air itself feels thick, almost aware.

Dimitri

(whispered)

"I don't like this. It feels like we're being watched."

Ana

(looking around)

"By what? I don't see anyone."

Dimitri

"Not by someone. By the place itself."

They move cautiously through empty streets. The city is clearly inhabited - there are signs of recent activity, vehicles that look almost normal, storefronts with goods displayed - but no people in sight.

Ana

"Where is everyone?"

As if in response to her question, they hear distant sounds of activity - voices, machinery, life.

Dimitri

"There. That direction."

They follow the sounds and emerge onto a busy street. The people here look human at first glance, but there are subtle differences - slightly longer limbs, eyes that reflect light differently, skin tones that shift subtly in the changing light.

Ana and Dimitri try to blend in, but their clothing clearly marks them as outsiders.

PEDESTRIAN 1

(in an unfamiliar language, but somehow understandable)

"Travelers from the outer rings?"

Ana

(improvising)

"Yes. Just... visiting."

The pedestrian nods and moves on, apparently satisfied.

Dimitri

(whispered to Ana)

"How did we understand that?"

Ana

(equally puzzled)

"I have no idea."

INT. ORGANIC MALL - CONTINUOUS

They enter what appears to be a shopping complex, but the walls pulse gently with bioluminescent patterns. Shops are integrated into what looks like living architecture.

Ana

(amazed)

"This place is incredible."

Dimitri

(focused)

"Let's find what we need and get out. We've got forty minutes."

They split up to search more efficiently. Ana browses what appears to be a technology section, while Dimitri examines materials that seem to be grown rather than manufactured.

MONTAGE - SEARCHING FOR MATERIALS

- Ana attempts to communicate with shopkeepers using gestures and broken phrases

- Dimitri finds herself in a section filled with crystalline structures that match one item on their list

- Both struggle with the organic currency system - everything seems to be bartered rather than purchased with money

- Funny moments as they try to understand local customs and navigate the living architecture

Dimitri approaches Ana, holding a small crystal that pulses with internal light.

Dimitri

(excited whisper)

"I found it. One of the materials from the list."

Ana

(checking her watch)

"Five minutes left. How do we get it?"

They look around. The shopkeeper - a tall, willowy being with shifting skin tones - is engaged with other customers.

Ana

"We could try to trade for it."

Dimitri

"With what? We don't have anything they'd want."

Ana looks at their remaining gold, then at the complex bartering system around them.

Ana

"There's no time to figure out their trade system."

They exchange a meaningful look.

Dimitri

(reluctantly)

"Just this once."

Ana keeps watch while Dimitri carefully pockets the crystal. The act feels wrong, but necessary.

The familiar pulling sensation begins - their recall is activating.

Ana

"Time's up."

They move to a secluded corner as the portal begins to form around them. The last thing they see is the shopkeeper looking in their direction with what might be confusion.

INT. BASEMENT LAB - CONTINUOUS

Ana and Dimitri materialize back in their lab, both breathing heavily from the adrenaline.

Ana

(checking the equipment)

"Clean jump. No complications."

Dimitri holds up the crystal, which continues to pulse with soft light.

Dimitri

"We got what we came for."

Ana

(celebrating)

"No hostile encounters, no getting trapped, and we found one of the materials!"

They high-five, but their celebration is muted by an underlying discomfort.

Dimitri

(after a moment)

"We stole that."

Ana

(sobering)

"Yeah. We did."

They sit in silence, examining the crystal.

Ana

"I keep thinking about what you said earlier. About hundreds of dimensional travelers stealing from people."

Dimitri

"What if that shopkeeper was just trying to make a living? What if that crystal was important to them?"

Ana

(firmly)

"This can't be how we do things going forward."

Dimitri

(agreeing)

"From now on, we trade fairly. No more taking things from innocent people."

Ana

"Even if it makes our mission harder?"

Dimitri

(determined)

"Especially then. We're not thieves, Ana. We're scientists."

Ana nods, placing the crystal in their secure storage container.

Ana

"Next time, we come prepared to trade properly."

Dimitri

"Next time, we do this right."

They look at the crystal, its pulsing light now seeming less like a victory and more like a reminder of the line they crossed.

Ana

"We'll make this right somehow."

Dimitri

"Yeah. We will."

The crystal continues to pulse softly as they power down their equipment, both scientists now carrying the weight of their first real moral compromise.
