Taking the risk: ep 7

INT. ANA'S BASEMENT LAB - DAY - THREE DAYS AFTER PREVIOUS JUMP

Ana stands before a wall of monitors displaying dozens of dimensional signatures, each representing a potential universe to explore. Dimitri sits nearby, methodically checking their equipment while still adjusting uncomfortably to her changed body.

Ana

"We could visit Jade and Morgan again, update them on our progress..."

Dimitri

(not looking up from her work)

"We just saw them. Besides, we need more materials before our next meeting means anything."

Ana

(studying the readings)

"So we pick a new universe. The question is which one."

Dimitri finally looks up, stretching carefully to avoid the discomfort her new proportions cause.

Dimitri

"Show me the options."

Ana cycles through several dimensional signatures on the main screen.

Ana

"This one has high energy readings - could be advanced technology."

Dimitri

"Or could be a war zone."

Ana

"This one shows signs of massive structures."

Dimitri

"Define massive."

Ana

(checking the data)

"City-sized buildings. Possibly larger."

Dimitri stands and walks to the monitors, her movement still slightly awkward as she navigates around equipment.

Dimitri

"That one. If we're looking for unusual materials, massive structures usually mean advanced civilizations."

Ana

(highlighting the signature)

"Two-hour window?"

Dimitri

"Make it ninety minutes. If these structures are as big as the readings suggest, we'll need time to explore properly."

Ana nods and begins calibrating the coordinates.

Ana

"Three days to prep?"

Dimitri

(already returning to equipment checks)

"Three days."

INT. BASEMENT LAB - THREE DAYS LATER - MORNING

The lab hums with activity as final preparations are made. Ana and Dimitri wear their most advanced jumpsuits, equipped with climbing gear, scanning equipment, and emergency supplies.

Ana

(checking her watch)

"Ninety minutes. Enough time to explore but not enough to get lost."

Dimitri

(testing a small scanner)

"These readings are still showing massive energy signatures. Whatever we're walking into, it's big."

Ana initiates the startup sequence. The familiar hum of the ring device fills the lab.

Ana

"Ready?"

Dimitri

(shouldering her pack)

"Let's see what this universe has to offer."

The void opens, and they step through together.

EXT. ALIEN LANDSCAPE - DAY

Ana and Dimitri emerge onto a vast plain under a purple-tinted sky. Before them rises a structure so massive it defies comprehension - a tower that stretches impossibly high, its peak lost in clouds. The base alone must be several miles wide.

Ana

(awestruck)

"The readings didn't do this justice."

Dimitri

(scanning with her device)

"The energy signatures are coming from inside. Multiple levels, each one different from the last."

The tower's surface appears to be made of a dark, metallic material that shifts and flows like liquid while maintaining its solid form. No visible entrances are apparent from their position.

Ana

"How do we get in?"

Dimitri

(studying her scanner)

"There. About half a mile around the base. I'm reading what might be an opening."

They begin walking around the tower's perimeter. The sheer scale becomes more apparent with each step - the curvature is so gradual they can barely perceive it.

EXT. TOWER BASE - ENTRANCE - LATER

They find what appears to be a seamless section of wall, but Dimitri's scanner shows an energy differential.

Dimitri

"This is it. There's something different about this section."

Ana approaches the wall and presses her hand against it. The material responds, flowing away from her touch to create an opening just large enough for them to enter.

Ana

(stepping back)

"Okay, that's either very convenient or very ominous."

Dimitri

"Both, probably."

They exchange a look, then step through the opening, which seals behind them with a soft whisper.

INT. TOWER - GROUND LEVEL - CONTINUOUS

The interior is vast and dimly lit by bioluminescent strips running along the walls. The space feels organic despite its obvious artificial construction. Strange geometric patterns pulse gently in the walls, and there's a low, almost inaudible humming that seems to come from everywhere.

Ana

(whispered)

"Do you hear that?"

Dimitri

(nodding)

"Like the building is breathing."

Ahead of them, a series of platforms rise through the center of the tower, creating what appears to be a transportation system.

Dimitri

(scanning)

"Each level has different energy signatures. We need to go up."

Ana

"Carefully. We don't know what we'll find."

They approach the nearest platform. As they step onto it, it begins to rise smoothly and silently.

INT. TOWER - LEVEL 2 - CONTINUOUS

The platform deposits them on the second level, which is markedly different from the ground floor. Here, the walls are lined with alcoves containing objects that pulse with internal light - possibly storage or display areas.

Ana

(examining the objects)

"These could be what we're looking for."

Dimitri

(keeping watch)

"Take readings first. We don't know if removing anything will trigger alarms."

Ana uses a scanner on several objects. The readings are promising - several match items from their material list.

Ana

(excited whisper)

"Three matches. Maybe four."

Dimitri

(tension rising)

"We need to keep moving up. See what else is here before we take anything."

Ana nods reluctantly, and they return to the platform system.

INT. TOWER - LEVEL 5 - CONTINUOUS

Several levels up, they encounter their first signs of active use. The walls here display moving images - possibly surveillance or communication systems. The organic humming is louder, more purposeful.

Dimitri

(urgently)

"Someone's monitoring this place."

Ana

(studying the displays)

"Look at these images. They're showing different parts of the tower."

On the displays, they can see various levels of the tower, some containing moving figures - tall, shadowy beings that seem to glide rather than walk.

Dimitri

(alarmed)

"We're not alone."

Ana

"How many levels have we passed without seeing anyone?"

Dimitri

(checking her notes)

"Seven. But these displays show activity on levels we haven't reached yet."

Ana

(decision made)

"One more level. Then we grab what we can and get out."

INT. TOWER - LEVEL 8 - CONTINUOUS

This level is different again - more technological, with complex machinery built into the walls. The air here feels charged with energy, making their hair stand on end.

Ana

(scanner beeping rapidly)

"Jackpot. Half the items on our list are showing up here."

Dimitri

(increasingly nervous)

"This feels like a control room. We shouldn't be here."

Ana

"Just give me two minutes to—"

A LOW ALARM suddenly echoes through the tower. The bioluminescent strips shift from soft blue to pulsing red.

Dimitri

"That's our cue to leave. Now."

Ana

(grabbing several small objects)

"Just these few—"

The sound of movement comes from above them - multiple somethings heading their way.

Ana

"Platform! Now!"

They rush to the transportation system, but the platform doesn't respond to their presence.

Dimitri

(panicked)

"It's not working!"

Ana

(trying different approaches)

"The alarm must have locked it down."

The sounds from above are getting closer - a rhythmic tapping that suggests multiple beings descending rapidly.

Dimitri

(looking around desperately)

"There! Emergency stairs!"

She points to a spiral staircase built into the tower wall - barely visible in the pulsing red light.

Ana

"That'll take forever!"

Dimitri

"Better than whatever's coming down to meet us!"

They rush to the staircase and begin descending as quickly as possible. Dimitri's new body proportions make the narrow stairs treacherous, and she has to grip the railings tightly.

Ana

(from below)

"How much time left?"

Dimitri

(checking her watch while trying to navigate the stairs)

"Twenty minutes!"

The sound of pursuit echoes from above - definitely getting closer.

INT. TOWER - LEVEL 4 - CONTINUOUS

They've descended several levels when Ana stops suddenly.

Ana

"Wait. Listen."

They pause. The sounds of pursuit have stopped.

Dimitri

(whispering)

"Maybe they gave up?"

Ana

(checking her scanner)

"Or maybe they're waiting for us."

As if summoned by her words, they hear new sounds - coming from below them now.

Dimitri

(realization dawning)

"They've surrounded us."

Ana

"How many levels down to the ground?"

Dimitri

"Too many. And they're probably waiting there too."

The sounds from both above and below are getting closer. They're trapped in the middle of the tower with no apparent escape route.

Ana

(desperately scanning the level they're on)

"There has to be another way out."

Dimitri

(checking the walls)

"The outer wall. If we could break through..."

Ana

"From this height? We'd never survive the fall."

The sounds of their pursuers grow louder. Multiple sets of the rhythmic tapping, coordinated and purposeful.

Ana

(urgent whisper)

"How long until recall?"

Dimitri

(checking her watch)

"Fifteen minutes."

Ana

"We need to hide. Somewhere they won't look."

Dimitri

(pointing to a section of wall with different patterns)

"There. That alcove."

They squeeze into a narrow space between wall sections, holding their breath as the sounds of pursuit grow even closer.

The tapping stops.

Everything goes silent.

Ana and Dimitri exchange terrified looks in the pulsing red light.

Then they hear it - a new sound. Soft, almost like whispering, but in no language they recognize. It's coming from multiple directions.

And it's getting closer.

Dimitri

(barely audible)

"They know we're here."

Ana

(gripping her equipment)

"Ten minutes."

The whispering grows louder, more insistent. Shadows begin moving past their hiding spot - tall, graceful figures that seem to flow rather than walk.

One shadow stops directly in front of their alcove.

Ana and Dimitri freeze, not daring to breathe.

The shadow begins to turn toward them.
