Taking the risk: ep 8

INT. TOWER - LEVEL 4 - CONTINUOUS (FROM PREVIOUS EPISODE)

The shadow figure turns fully toward Ana and Dimitri's hiding spot. A tall, ethereal being with flowing robes and luminescent eyes steps into view. Its hand reaches toward their alcove.

Ana

(desperately checking her watch)

"Three... two... one..."

The familiar pulling sensation begins just as the being's hand touches Ana's shoulder.

FLASH OF LIGHT.

INT. BASEMENT LAB - CONTINUOUS

Ana and Dimitri materialize in their lab, gasping and disoriented. But they're not alone - the tower GUARD crashes to the floor beside them, writhing and making incomprehensible sounds.

The guard appears humanoid but wrong - too tall, limbs slightly too long, skin with an otherworldly pallor. He clutches his head as if in severe pain.

Dimitri

(scrambling backward)

"What the hell?!"

Ana

(grabbing equipment)

"He came through with us!"

The guard attempts to stand but collapses, clearly weakened by the dimensional transition. He speaks in the same whispered language they heard in the tower, but his voice is strained, desperate.

GUARD

(in alien language, subtitled)

"Where... where am I? The light... it burns..."

Ana

(to Dimitri)

"He's sick. The dimensional shift affected him."

Dimitri

(wary)

"Or it's a trick."

The guard tries to approach them but stumbles. Ana and Dimitri easily overpower him in his weakened state.

Ana

"Storage room. Now."

They help/drag the guard into a small adjoining room, locking the door behind them.

INT. BASEMENT LAB - CONTINUOUS

Ana and Dimitri lean against the locked door, breathing heavily.

Dimitri

"This is not what I signed up for when we started dimension hopping."

Ana

(checking the door)

"What do we do with him?"

Dimitri

"First, we make sure he can't escape. Then we figure out what he wants."

From behind the door, they hear the guard's voice, weaker now, still speaking in the alien language before trailing off into silence.

Ana

"He passed out."

Dimitri

(checking their stolen materials)

"At least we got what we came for."

Ana

"At what cost? We've kidnapped someone."

Dimitri

"He followed us. That's not kidnapping."

Ana

"Tell that to him when he wakes up."

INT. BASEMENT LAB - NEXT MORNING

Ana enters the lab carrying coffee and breakfast. Dimitri is already there, monitoring equipment near the storage room door.

Ana

"Any movement?"

Dimitri

"Been quiet for hours. Either he's still unconscious or..."

A KNOCK from inside the storage room interrupts her.

VOICE (O.S.)

(in accented English)

"Hello? Is someone there?"

Ana and Dimitri exchange surprised looks.

Ana

"He's speaking English now."

Dimitri

(approaching the door cautiously)

"How do we know it's not still a trick?"

VOICE (O.S.)

"Please, I know you're there. I... I remember what happened. You're not from the tower world, are you?"

Ana makes a decision and opens the door slightly.

The figure inside is completely transformed - no longer the ethereal being from the tower, but a man in his thirties, disheveled and confused, wearing clothes that look like they're from several decades ago.

MAN

(relieved)

"Thank God. Real people."

Ana

(cautiously)

"Who are you?"

The man sits on the floor, looking exhausted but relieved.

MAN

"My name is Marcus. Marcus Webb. And I think... I think I've been lost for a very long time."

INT. BASEMENT LAB - LATER

Marcus sits at their work table, gratefully drinking coffee while Ana and Dimitri watch him warily. He looks human now, but there's something otherworldly in his eyes.

Marcus

"The year... what year is it?"

Ana

"2024."

Marcus

(closing his eyes)

"Fifteen years. I've been gone fifteen years."

Dimitri

"Gone where?"

Marcus

"Dimension hopping. Like you two, I'm guessing."

He gestures to their equipment.

Marcus (CONT'D)

"I was a physicist. Working on theoretical dimensional travel. Built my own device, much cruder than yours."

Ana

"What happened?"

Marcus

"First jump went wrong. Ended up in the tower dimension, but I couldn't get back. My device was damaged in the transition."

Dimitri

"Fifteen years?"

Marcus

(nodding sadly)

"The beings there... they're not evil, exactly. But they don't understand concepts like 'trapped' or 'wanting to go home.' They kept me as a curiosity. Eventually, I started... changing."

Ana

"The form we saw you in?"

Marcus

"Adaptation. The longer you stay in a dimension, the more you become part of it. I was losing myself, becoming one of them."

Dimitri

(understanding)

"But the dimensional shift back here reversed it."

Marcus

"Temporarily, I think. I can feel it trying to pull me back to that form."

He looks at them hopefully.

Marcus (CONT'D)

"You have dimensional travel working. Could you... could you help me get home? To my original dimension?"

Ana and Dimitri exchange a look.

Ana

"We'd need to know exactly where you came from."

Marcus

(eagerly)

"I kept records. Mental ones. Dimensional coordinates, energy signatures. I've had fifteen years to memorize every detail."

Dimitri

"It would be risky. We don't know what kind of dimensional interference—"

Ana

(interrupting)

"We have to try. Imagine if we were stuck somewhere for fifteen years."

Dimitri

(after a moment)

"You're right. We help him."

Marcus

(grateful)

"Thank you. Both of you. You have no idea what this means."

INT. BASEMENT LAB - THREE DAYS LATER

The lab is reconfigured with additional equipment. Marcus works alongside Ana and Dimitri, his knowledge of dimensional theory proving invaluable despite being fifteen years out of date.

Marcus

(at a monitor)

"There. Those are the coordinates to my home dimension."

Ana

(checking the readings)

"The energy signature is stable. We can make the jump."

Dimitri

"Two-hour window. Should be plenty of time to get you home and get back."

Marcus

(emotional)

"I can't thank you enough for this."

Ana

"Just promise us you'll be more careful with dimensional travel in the future."

Marcus

(laughing)

"After fifteen years stuck in an alien tower? I'm never leaving my home dimension again."

INT. BASEMENT LAB - LATER

The ring device powers up. Marcus stands ready, wearing a spare jumpsuit and carrying a small bag of his few possessions.

Marcus

"One last thing. If this works, if I make it home..."

He reaches into his bag and pulls out a small, sleeping creature - a kitten with unusual markings and slightly oversized ears.

Marcus (CONT'D)

"My cat had a litter just before I left. This little one... she's been with me through everything. But she deserves a real home, with people who can take care of her properly."

He offers the kitten to Dimitri.

Marcus (CONT'D)

"Would you...?"

Dimitri

(surprised, taking the kitten carefully)

"I... yes. Of course."

The kitten opens sleepy eyes and mews softly, immediately snuggling into Dimitri's arms.

Ana

(smiling)

"She likes you."

Dimitri

(looking down at the kitten with unexpected tenderness)

"What's her name?"

Marcus

"I called her Echo. Because no matter how far I traveled, she was always there."

Ana

(checking the device)

"Ready when you are."

Marcus takes a deep breath, looking at the portal.

Marcus

"Fifteen years. I never thought I'd see home again."

The void opens, and according to the readings, it leads to Marcus's original dimension.

Marcus

(to Ana and Dimitri)

"If this works, you've given me my life back."

Ana

"Good luck, Marcus."

Marcus steps toward the portal, then pauses.

Marcus

"Be careful out there. The multiverse is bigger and stranger than you can imagine. And sometimes... sometimes it doesn't let you go home."

He steps through and vanishes.

Ana

(monitoring the readings)

"Signal's stable. He made it through."

Dimitri

(still holding Echo)

"Think he'll be okay?"

Ana

"He survived fifteen years in an alien dimension. I think he can handle being home."

The portal closes, and their readings show Marcus's successful arrival in his home dimension.

Dimitri

(to the kitten)

"Well, Echo, looks like you're stuck with us now."

Echo purrs and settles more comfortably in Dimitri's arms.

Ana

(smiling at the sight)

"She's already making herself at home."

Dimitri

(with the first genuine smile she's had in weeks)

"Yeah. She is."

As they power down the equipment, Echo continues to purr in Dimitri's arms - a small reminder that even in the vastness of the multiverse, sometimes the most important connections are the smallest ones.
