It's gotten referenced here and there, but the short version is that he had just broken up with his girlfriend, was at his lowest point and contemplating suicide, when 'The Spider' offered him the chance to 'be a hero' and 'help people.' After he agreed, and was on the hook, she revealed what she actually was, and gave him time to craft his own contract, informing him that he'd get training before he was sent out on-mission, (rightfully) confident that anything he came up with she could twist. As such he's got a lot of protections against blunt-force fuckery, but the twistier stuff can still, at least partially, work against him.
