And with this, I'm done. Also, holy shit, this is book-sized. Next up, MHA.

Paul is almost a quintessential case of squandered potential and trying to live vicariously through his kid. He left his family because of his personal issues and what I can only assume is being tired of either not measuring up as far as his family is concerned. Then he fucks off into the wild blue yonder looking to make his way. Gets proficient with Sword styles, has his grand adventure, settled down, and had Rudy. Rudy shows talent at quite a few things and a thirst for knowledge, but he isn't like Paul. Paul tries to "mould" Rudy by constantly manipulating things to make Rudy more like himself, but when that fails, he tries to make Rudy act like him by forcing him to relive his own life experiences (at least that's how it looks to me.). I'd be honestly shocked if either of his wives let him anywhere near the babies. Am I not far off in assuming that for all that Paul thinks he's better than His Nottos roots, he's almost as bad in that he can't seem to stop letting them live rent free in his head and he's definitely still leaning on the connections to live his life?

2024-12-25 21:25:35 +0000 UTCI just binged the fuck out of chapters 4-11 and am excited for the next arc. Masterpiece of slow derailment that extends into a new story as always. characterization that is just as good again, too. Lee, you never cease to impress.

2024-12-06 04:43:54 +0000 UTCJust realized that this is about the length of a long light novel. If you do something similar with your original work, get a publisher in Japan that will badly translate things, and produce something this length every two months you'd make a decent living.

2024-11-21 01:52:25 +0000 UTCAh, I see the confusion. You can make cold water, because you can also make ice with a single water magic spell (most of Roxy's go-to attack spells are ice-based), but you can't heat it up without fire magic. Just how magic in the setting works.

2024-11-18 14:53:23 +0000 UTCNot him, I am talking about others. For example Ghislaine Dedoldia is a Sword God King rank, and was part of a S-Rank party, and a bunch of other achievements. I would expect minimum 3 skills for her. Elinalise Dragonroad even more. I do wonder how Land Mana looks to Ghislaine’s magic eye. Or how Kishirika would react to a magic eye she never saw before since she is meant to have all the magic (demon) eyes. As for where he made cool water (not hot) in chapter 3, he cast the spell saying “cool stream”. If he can make it cold he should be able to make it hot, ice is a combo of water and wind in that system, so temperature control (in either direction) is combo magic (water with fire or wind) or it is an intrinsic part of water.

2024-11-18 04:17:29 +0000 UTCFixed the Mystery thing, but can you be a more specific where the character made hot water with a single dual-element internal-only casting? Also, no skills because of the depowerment before he was dropped in and given the Falna. He'll develop some over time, though.

2024-11-18 03:44:59 +0000 UTCI would honestly be disappointed if he didn’t kill Paul the moment he was strong enough. He literally embodies all the negative traits that your WC MC’s always worry about and use as a reason why they do what they do. Like if you too every single thing your SI characters hate and bundled them into a single entity you would get Paul. Also as a side note you mentioned in this chapter you can’t make hot water with a single spell when you did it when Roxy was around. Also the first chapter that had Falna you called the skill Development Ability instead of skill. DA are things you get at level up if you meat the criteria, Mystry for example is a DA. The only other known way to get a DA is to get a skill that lets you use it without actually having it (it’s implied that if you actually unlock the DA it will make it stronger). So he should not have the Mystery DA, but he could have a skill that lets him emulate the effect without it. You get 1 DA at level up if you qualify for one (you get to choose), if you don’t qualify you miss out on it for that level, no getting a DA that level, and still only a single one next level if you qualify. MC would qualify for enough that he won’t be done before level 10. Though he won’t get Hunter (I think that’s the name) which you need to kill a lot of monster in a short amount of time to qualify for and you can only get it for your first level up (I don’t know if it counts your deeds before the Falna). As a side note your deeds before the Falna would give skills on getting it, so people with a hissy full of significant events or achievements would have a few skills. Finn got 2 skills when he first got his Falna (one fore his goal/drive/actions and one for training with monks for I think 4 years). It’s not clear if he for it right away but iirc it’s implied he did.

2024-11-17 09:43:29 +0000 UTCAlso, yes, agreed, but killing Paul would've estranged Rudeus from the rest of his family, and Ghislaine, no matter how deserved it may be.
PublicLee Speaking
2024-11-17 05:05:31 +0000 UTCBecause as strong as Rudcifer is as an AoE Monster, Paul is an upper-Advanced lower-Saint-Class North God Warrior, and that makes him Very Very hard to kill, requiring a self-sacrificing move against a legendary monster to take him out, and he Still thought he'd be fine until right before he died, wondering why he wasn't getting healed, until he realized there... wasn't much left to heal.

2024-11-17 05:04:22 +0000 UTCPaul deserves death. I've read other stories in this setting and it's pretty common for him to be scum. Honestly, Lee is the holy paladin type. Please do the world a favor and kill him. Please. It would have made perfect sense for him to die in this chapter, and I don't understand why he's still alive, but please for the love of god, kill him.

2024-11-17 04:01:11 +0000 UTCYeah, it's honestly the weakest part, but that's what happens when you give Paul time to talk relatively uninterrupted. Also, will post Build in a few.

2024-11-16 18:48:11 +0000 UTCI remember a few chapters back, you said you were going to link to the CYOA you used on the final chapter, you forgot. Thanks for the chapter, was a really well choreographed fight, though the mc reading out the letter felt jumbled to me.

2024-11-16 13:22:31 +0000 UTCGoddamn was that a fucking chapter, you outdo yourself all the time man!!

2024-11-16 04:03:24 +0000 UTC... Yes I knew the destination due to reading Space Cowboy, but holey fuck was this final part a journey and a half. If this doesn't get funded within a month of you posting this final part on QQ I don't know what you can write to get a new story funded. This may be my firm alternat to funding WCU, where I fund a chapter of WCU and then a chapter of this.

2024-11-16 03:05:11 +0000 UTCI get that, I was more going with the Turning Points as Paradigm Shifts, so while in Canon it was just a 'well, that happened' moment over in ~30 seconds, this would've been a full episode slugfest with appropriate Sakuga.

2024-11-16 03:00:01 +0000 UTCDamn, this was honestly a great ride, now that you've gotten me so invested it ends though! lol.

2024-11-16 01:50:41 +0000 UTCPretty good. In an way I'm happy he lost or least at best was a draw with Paul, he is still a kid after all and it shows that he has a long way to go. And it's also great that he grew so much more from an actual battle using almost everything he has as opposed to just training. Paul is one of those holier than thou, arrogant, self-righteous types that no matter what won't ever change his mind or his ways. Hell even when terrible things happen to him and his family he just gets worse, whatever happens to him he deserves.

2024-11-16 01:35:54 +0000 UTCDamn, that was a strong finish Lee. This was everything I hoped for with a true resolution of Paul's status with Rudeus. Very nicely character driven with plenty of action moments that culminate in Rudeus leaving. And his family having no recourse but to watch the trainwreck...

2024-11-16 00:39:26 +0000 UTCGreat chapter, excellent place to finish, can't wait for the next book; 'Til then really looking forward to get back to MHA Small note, Turning Point 1 is the name of the manga chapter/episode where the disaster pops, so it was a little confusing
Mr Mouse
2024-11-16 00:33:33 +0000 UTCAgreed, but you've only covered book 1, which actually gave me a laugh with you saying the fic was book sized, so i was mainly talking about Paul's actions in book 1 and at that time i can kinda understand the argument about the nobility thing. the other times we see him are after his character UNvelopment so...him being MORE of a petty selfish asshole made sense to me when i read it.
Joseph Fera
2024-11-15 23:56:22 +0000 UTCIf only season 1 existed, I might even agree, but the other two times we see him, as well as the blatant repeated lies that fuck over Rudeus (Rudy could've gotten from Zenith's mom in Milis, but Rudy is Never Taught About His Own Family, encapsulated with that 'we're not nobles' outright falsehood) show how lazy, selfish, petty, and generally assholic Paul truly is.
PublicLee Speaking
2024-11-15 23:52:12 +0000 UTCyou know, the funniest thing to me is that in the original version Paul's actions actually COULD be read as the actions of a caring father trying to make sure his son didn't repeat his mistakes...but under all that he really was a petty little shit wasn't he.
Joseph Fera
2024-11-15 23:33:31 +0000 UTCThat was as explosive as expected. Angry Mango being as bitchy and possessive as usual. Though it sucks that it went this way, I also believe it was for the best.

2024-11-15 23:22:44 +0000 UTCDamn, what a send off. Have to admit, I wish this wasn’t the cutoff point and we’d get more from this but I can wait. Thanks for the chapter and this story!
