Past the Crossroads
Added 2025-07-01 00:01:37 +0000 UTCIf I were in your shoes, I would be concerned about the time that has passed since my last upload, which does require explanation. I am working toward a change in life which will give me more time for video projects... Not that I've stopped! The new video is timing out to about an hour, the same as the G5 video. Granville Ott, the architect of the TI-99 computer, gave a couple talks at VCF SouthWest, which I watched on YouTube, blowing-apart a few long-held beliefs about the computer and the company. I've adjusted my script already. The people interviewing him... I get it, they are not David Letterman ... but it seemed like they could have got even more from him.
Anyway, back to the point of this post. I did make the difficult decision with my sister to sell our inherited childhood home and I want to use the funds to retire earlier and spend that time on family and creative endeavours. The property ultimately costs me time and focus. On the other hand, my father built the house himself 50 years ago and it is difficult to give up for that reason. The buyers will maintain and enjoy the property in my father's tradition better than I could. As the old saying goes, "If you love it, let it go."
My father was a collector too, restoring old tractors back to a useful and as-new condition. We aren't so different in that way. These old electrical gauges and a 1950's laboratory bench with a 1-inch thick slate top I discovered among his things and I find them as cool as I'm sure he did. A work surface you can make chalk notes on! Why didn't that catch-on?

Oh, and the Shag Rake.
To have this audience for my videos that was impossible when I was doing videos in the 80's and 90's, I still find incredible. As for Patreon, more important than the money itself, funds raised is a reliable measure of how much you enjoy my work and evidence that there is an audience that is sustainable and has a lot of room to grow when I can increase my output. An audience that values my work alone and not looking for rewards or shout-outs for donations, even when I've offered them. Output will be my focus once I get things wrapped-up in July on the sale. For that reason, I am putting a hold on donations for July. I much appreciate your patience.

Early retirement? There's no way you're _that_ much older than me! ;) Congratulations, and take your time. Quality and quality of life over quantity.
