Grrl Power #1299 - Hell hath no fury like a cornered sniper

Thank you for the support! You guys are awesome!

I'm sure some people will be tempted to comment on Peggy getting a headshot at 300 (?) yards on a moving target after both her and her rifle tumbled out of a crashed helicopter. Not to spoil anything, but that is addressed on the next page. I can only fit so much per page. Also, you don't know what she was even aiming at. That could have been a terrible miss. I mean, it wasn't. Just saying it might have been.

It's a good thing that hardcase wasn't locked. One thing I wouldn't like to have in my pockets if I had a job that involved hitting the ground and crawling to cover on a semi-regular basis is a bunch of keys. Maybe military people who do have to carry around a bunch of key have some special "key sheath" that prevents gratuitous poking.

Panel 6 - Peggy is just daring Sydney to say something flippant about "The Rapes." Sydney's just thinking "Why is she being so intense? Does she think I have something to do with "The Rapes?" Surely she knows I'm against "The Rapes." Wait, am I on record one way or another? Maybe I should jump up and blurt out my position to avoid ambiguity... oh wait, she's continuing her story."

The old 'dropped pumpkin' sound.

eddi_TBH

Yeah, check the next comic not because Peggy is intelligent enough to know which side of the vehicle the driver sits in the country she’s operating in

Steve M

She is supporting it from above with her grip on the underside of the stock. When you have people actively trying to kill you, you'd be surprised how much strength you get. If her leg hadn't already been catastrophically amputated, I would not be entirely surprised if she could have lifted the helicopter off of her leg enough to get her leg from under it. As it is, the pressure on the end of her leg is probably the only t h ING keeping her from bleeding out...

JasonAW3

Like I said, bullet drop. Remember, Peggy ISN'T a super. She's just a darn good sniper..

JasonAW3

As more than likely, they are coming in at an angle, I figured a bit of lead was probably was probably in order... Straight runs to crash sites are rare, so...

JasonAW3

Silver Star with a Purple Heart, easily. Depending on the body count she racks up, probably a Distinguished Service.

JasonAW3

Yeah... That gets embarassing... And kinda messy.

JasonAW3

You raise a good point

Teksura

Anybody in a comfy seat on the move is a VIP target. The driver now has command-level brains. All over him. TBH, I'd scream, vomit and run away. Moreso if I was just hired to drive.

eddi_TBH

Heads exploding without warning can do that. Their own engine noise finishes the job Peggy's silencer is doing. And she essentially invisible. As bad off as she is, Peggy currently has the advantage. Until more numbers and or heavy firepower arrive. Of course we know how the story ends...

eddi_TBH

And a .308 anywhere is deadly. Even through the radiator. They bail out to find what went wrong and then their heads start exploding.

eddi_TBH

Okay, "Blorch" is amazing. Poetry.

Jeffrey Hirschman

Check to our left. Her support arm elbow is resting on the case lid, which is taking the weight. All she needs is to hold tight.

eddi_TBH

Morale soars. Gunfire is exchanged as everyone tries for a promotion. Peggy is once more alone to deal with more serious issues.

eddi_TBH

Carrying keys is not very common in the field, in Peggy's case (ahem) the case would be normally unlocked and ready for her so she get set up just this fast.

eddi_TBH

I actually know people who could make that shot. For someone with the level of experience she's said to have, 300m ain't that big of a deal. I wouldn't expect the rifle to be damaged because the case is intact and that a serious case. Just remember, a sniper never wraps their thumb around the stock, because your thumb has a pulse and it will hurt your aim.

John Van Stry

Or she thought hitting the leader was a good idea

Todd Ellner

Meh. there are ways. Fingers fit in the gap between the scope and the barrel stock, for example

Philip Brown

She was going to take out the driver or the officer. Either way the cost/benefit calculation just changed for the insurgents, and not in a good way

Todd Ellner

Driver is on the left, which makes sense since they drive on the left in Iraq and large parts of Afghanistan (forget where this takes place). That means she just nailed the officer. Make a morale check, insurgents.

Todd Ellner

Can't forget the Purple Heart she already earned

Todd Ellner

And since the target is moving pretty much straight towards her there's almost no leading. Just the target wobbling and getting bigger.

Todd Ellner

Bullet drop is for non-supers

Todd Ellner

I mean, if she was supporting it with her hand below the foregrip, it would obscure her sight picture.

Erin Palette

Yeah I know. But the terrorists seem to have found only one thing that they're actually right on. Drive on the left. *laughs*.

Justaguy

They drive on the right (and correct) side of the road in the Middle East.

Kevin Wright

Uhhh... presumably heavy-ish long range rifle.. inconvenient long leverage for gravity pulling the barrel down..... it's resting on nothing, and peggy has her hand.. ON TOP of the rifle instead of supporting it?? Apparently Peggy is a super after all. She has the power of levitating gun barrels with her mind? :-}

Philip Brown

Three hundred yard headshot? Unless they were barreling across the desert at high speed, with a good sniper rig, even moving targets aren't too hard to hit. Heck, I'm not a sniper and I've hit moving targets out to about 400 yards. Just have to know how to lead the target and adjust for bullet drop, and wind, and things between you and the target. But inverted, injured and pinned under a crashed helicopter with a catastrophically amputated leg? Yeah, I'd have to say, that was a miracle shot..

JasonAW3

Hardened cases usually have an inbuilt unlocking mechanism, so no keys required.

Jon Gibson

How many medals are you allowed to receive from a single military action? Because Peggy's going for the record. Or with less hyperbole, this is a Silver Star, maybe a Distinguished Service Medal. Continuing to fight while grievously wounded makes the generals break out the big medals.

Greg Morrow

One shot, one kill. May not have gotten the driver... this time..., but the effect will be similar, as far as those riding in the back are concerned. Driver ain't gonna come in using a straight line, which will seriously eff up any accuracy from the back bed, and possibly tossing a rider or two, because OSHA isn't there to protect them, and heck, the driver may chose to retreat. He may not be ready to commit to his 16 virgins just yet, don'tchaknow.

Town Crier

I would guess that most of the locks on carryable assets would be combination locks, so that everyone who needs access doesn't each need a key and so hostiles can't salvage a key.

Jared Kolbly

The stinger suggests that she was trying to make the truck weave. I would guess that shooting the driver wouldn't make the incoming fire stop. Nor would shooting either of the gunmen. Shooting the passenger first would make the driver freak out.

Killianti

Right hand drive. She's used to Left hand drive.

John Van Stry

Maybe she took out the passenger because being on her back she had it reversed? Or she was aiming for the driver and was off due to distance, wind speed, lack of time/spotter to make an accurate shot?

Steve M

That's because even crazy terrorists know which is the better side of the road to drive on. :)

Justaguy

Or bought/salvaged one that was left behind by one of the aforementioned armies.

Mike

Like Sydney, I don't 'military', but I have a key ring from Ridge wallet that keeps everything together and non-jingly. I bet the army or whoever has stuff like that.

Mike

Or, as an American, she assumed it was a left-hand drive. (I'm from a "driver on the right" country myself.)

Justaguy

I am guessing she thought it was a left hand drive. Must have imported that truck from South Africa area, India, Australia, Phillipines, Japan or Argentina, Chile, Paname, Paraguay, or Uruguay.

Justaguy

There was a moment where she went "I shouldn't feel offended but as a woman.." on Cora saying aliens won't be interested in stealing humanities women, which Peg was...less than amused by

3of4

War is ugly and not all origin stories are uplifting. Good learning moment for Sydney 😞

Michael Obert

I feel like Peggy prolly hit that guy in the passenger seat by accident. Obviously the first target should be the driver, since if you take out the driver everyone else in the car now has to deal with a runaway vehicle situation and can't really do much about the sniper lining up their next shot. Either that or whoever is shooting a gun at her, since taking that guy out means you no longer have someone shooting at you. But I also imagine now that she knows how far off her shot was, she will be able to correct for the next shot.

Teksura

That did stand out to me. I was trying to recall if Sydney had said something about β€œthe rapes” at some point in the past?
