That's a good point. I think it is fair to say that Hulk Hogan is more famous than Terry Gene Bollea for instance, and some actors like Nathan Fillion definitely keep up a public persona. We, of course, have expectations about what they must be like in real life but I don't think those are as firmly held nor as important to us as the ones we have of their public personas. And I'd say it's probably possible to ignore one's fame, but it's hard to find examples because most fame comes with many people expecting one to interact with them when they're recognized. Maybe Bill Gates? He doesn't seem to care much about his fame at least, but I spose that's one of those passive expectations.

2017-05-03 06:18:35 +0000 UTCI really like your argument for what fame is, especially because it has some really interesting implications for those who want to be famous. If fame is just having expectations set for you, then does wanting to be famous equate in a way to wanting a purpose in life? Like most people wouldn't say that musicians who are going on tours and expected to make albums are also wondering if they have a purpose in life. Or maybe people want to be successful in something they have an interest in, and so they want to be famous as a way of knowing that they are successful?

2017-04-29 14:02:02 +0000 UTCWhat I really like about the idea that expectations make fame is that those expectations seem to work - for some persons - as well for the followers as for the famous ones. The expectations of famed one in respect to what a famous person is thought to be like can change their behaviour, as shown in your example of Hanna Witton. Perhaps it would be an interesting question if the status of being famous itself has more or less two "flavours" - the one where those expectations are only passively stowed upon a person by the 'fans' and the famous person just continous to do what he/she/it was doing anyway and the one where the famous one as well plays the game of being famous. Also: is it even possible to be famous and ignore it completely? if it ist just the expectations of others, it should be, shouldn't it?
