Love for this video, for you, for all who suffer.

That was an incredible video. Thank you for sharing. You speak from and to the heart.

Thank you, fellow cosmonaut, for being a rational and compassionate voice for mental health.

I don't have the adjectives to express how heavily and intimately this impacted me, for how deeply touched I was, or for how strongly this resonated with me on a personal level. It took me what seemed like forever to stop sobbing. So, I'm just going to say this: Thank you. I understand how you feel.

Coming in late. I'm not suicidal, but your comment about 'functioning' absolutely rang true. My ability to function even when I'm coming apart at the seams has actively impaired my ability to get help.

Also, that video made me sob.

I finally worked myself round to watching this video today. I was sectioned at the end of January - "voluntarily" it was either that or 136... I was medicated and then released after ten days under a crisis team, discharged from the crisis team three months later. I had 5 discussions with a psychiatrist, many discussions with RMNs, Social workers and the occasional support worker in a professional capacity. There was zero form of therapy, aside from the haphazard opinions of those above, most of whom i saw once only and never knew me or my full thoughts and feelings. The immediate solice i found in those i was locked away with, the patients. Im an advanced paramedic practising in london. I have spent years seeing patients...no, people, assessing their mental health and referring them onwards. I was... Speechless at the incredible lack of empathy shown to these people, to me and them.. Us. I was logical the night i was sectioned, i had not lost sight of the consequences nor did i lack the understanding. For me in the "then" that was my decision, based on what i still believe was a sound mind. What changed, or i should say, is still changing, is my environment. At that point in my life the (metaphorical) fire of the room i stayed in, at the top of a ten story building, was so hot i felt that to jump was by far the least painful option. That is surely not insanity but sanity in the face of all adversity. To add to this, that January night was the scariest thing i have ever gone through. So now, what has changed? I have to admit the SSRIs have helped, but my mind is still my mind. My mindscape has changed though, and through that my environment. In a life where everything is our perception, i am getting better at perceiving not just the fire, but the pockets of air in the smoke, the cool thing water running from the pipes. Suddenly the logical moves are shifted. Still the same mind, still fully functioning. Still maintaining full capacity. So if it wasnt mental illness, did they have the right to save my life and take my liberty, seeing as you said Olly, there was nothing illegal going on. Well, yes! At least, im very glad they did. I was lucky, i was able to afford private therapy (with an excellent therapist who id be very happy to introduce anyone to and is inexpensive (haha shameless plug, shes great though)... For me it was more that the insanity existed on the outside, and i was looking for a way to... Survive it? And how can anyone who finds themself perceiving this reality not, logically, and in a sound frame of mind, seek not to end it? The intervention to me is not to place the person under section, like they have committed a crime, or that they are incapable of making decisions - but to place their reality, their surroundings ergo their perceptions - in a stasis, whilst those who care come to clear out the smoke and quench the fire. Someone who cant figure out how to use the fire extinguisher in the room, or who cant find it, isnt insane, but the options open to them are limited to what is in their control. The problem with suicide automatically related to mental health is such a damaging stigma, but then, the stigma lies in mental health and the understanding around it. In medicine no one is worried if you have a cold, but cancer is another thing entirely. There are clear cut boundaries tbat just dont exist in the mind. So i found myself treated with distrust, without dignity or individuality. My right to smoke was taken away from me and my privacy removed. We were treated like cattle, all of us seen as a collective and not as individuals with holistic needs. And why? Lack of understanding, lack of training, lack of good pay and lack of staff retention. Lack of experience. For someone who works in the NHS, it shames me to be part of this broken machine, under this broken democracy. But i cannot understate the enormous surge of pride to add my voice to yours and say, in my way, at least - i get it, i see your voyage, i understand. You are truly not as alone as we feel.

Holy crap, I think that must be one of the most powerful videos I have ever watched. Your description about the cosmonaut... such an eloquent description of how it felt. Fucking hell though, aren't those horrible rate whatever on a scale of 1 to 4 over the phone surveys just the pits. I didn't have to wait six months it was only a couple, but until then that survey and a bag of drugs is all you get. I wish I could say something insightful and clever about philosophy but I can't so just.... I understand how you feel.

What a video. Thank you for this, for your honesty, for your creativity <3

I've been a fan of yours for several weeks now, but after I saw this video, I went straight to Patreon. I don't know how I can thank you in an adequate way, but suffice it to say: thank you. And on a sillier note: There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your Philosophy Tube.

Thank you so much
