Witchcraft, Gender, & Marxism | Philosophy Tube

Hello lovely Patrons! Here's my Halloween episode - it's about the history and philosophy of the European Witch Hunts! The music is by the wonderful Zoë Blade and Nina Richards, and I really pushed the boat out on the production quality, particularly the lighting - we used a real fire!

Hope you like it! If you're curious about how we did it and the behind the scenes stuff I'll of course talk about it on my next livestream!

The municipality of Oudewater in the Netherlands has been issuing certificates that state that "the body weight is in proportion to its build" since the 16th century as a way of protecting people against accusations of witchcraft

I only found your stuff no more than a week ago, but it's bloody brilliant! I have probably learned more about ideas and perspectives about life in this past week then most of my life, and I'm not even done with your videos yet. Keep up the good work!

I've been following your channel for a couple years, but when you said what I've been saying, (paraphrasing) that women owned the sphere of medicine, healing and bringing life into the world, and then were enslaved, I was like, yup, he knows what he's talking about. HERE'S MY MONEY. Thank you thank you thank you for these videos!! Keep up the awesome work!

I was blown away by this. This video was what led me here, and convinced me to throw money at you. I'm pretty sure you killed capitalism for me.

Japan was able to industrialize the way it did in the Meiji era though due to the influence of foreign countries that had already industrialized, taking a lot of the tech and lessons learned from other countries that did build their tech off the influence of slavery to one degree or another. So it is still rather difficult to say.

Yup, just checked - your first pledge hasn't gone through yet, it won't until around the 5th of next month, so the rewards start accumulating then :) Also sometimes the calendar works out such that I have to edit them before the pledges go through but they get released after, so new patrons end up getting left off.

the pledge period starts on nov 1. if you pledged anytime in oct, your pledge hasn't been withdrawn yet.

About 24 minutes in where you say we can't say definately if [slavery] was necessary for industralization as we don't have two Earths to compare. We do have one country that did manage to industralize without a slave labourforce. Japan managed to legislate its way to progress during the Meiji Restoration, getting rid of Shoguns and Samurais in favour of a modernized nation-state and got rich from international trade. Great video by the way.

I read Caliban and the Witch on your recommend ages ago and I was like "please let this one be about that" and then you pulled out the book and I was like yeeeeeaahh!

Have you ever seen Arthur Miller's "The Crucible?" It draws parallels between the Salem witch trials and the McCarthy-era Communist investigations.

Great video as always, but am I doing something wrong, I'm a $5 pledge but haven't seen my name in the last two videos???

Are there transcripts of your videos?

when i saw where this was heading i got a little nervous for a sec, so thank you for raising the caution about transphobia. i think there are some other potential pitfalls lurking in contemporary revival movements of traditional pagan beliefs that i wish you had also brought up-- for example the heathenry movement (which in my understanding is distinct from wicca but both fall under the umbrella of neopaganism) is, not always but very often, associated with white supremacist political movements and beliefs, at least here in the US and probably elsewhere. maybe this video was supposed to be about wicca in particular. but i think an examination of the wider good and bad ramifications of different strands of neopaganism might be an interesting topic for a future time? in any case, great work Mr. Thorn. thank you for another interesting, informative, entertaining video.

Bravo! My wife and I recently watched Devil's Bride/Tulen Morsian about the witch hunts in Sweden in the late 1660's. As you'd described, nearly all of the persecutions happened to protect the ruling class, or to avenge jealousies and settle scores among ordinary people. A very terrible set of events, which is happening now in America in different forms and usually persecuting different sets of innocents.
