BTS Pics - 'How To Spy on Everyone'
Added 2020-01-17 15:27:19 +0000 UTCHello lovely Patrons!
We wrapped last night on my next video, the first of 2020, working title How To Spy on Everyone. This is going to be my 400th upload, and it'll be something quite special! It's about algorithms, data, surveillance, and privacy, featuring a unique editing style and the return of an old character...

I was SO grateful to have the help of four truly stellar supporting artists on this one - from left to right - Eric (@spidermantifa), Natalie (@snorenat), Jo (@winterymute), and Evren (@bhevren). Some of you may recognise Alice Quinn Rose at the bottom there (@AliceQuinnRose), who was our amazing producer - she produced my video Queer✨ and the Shakespeare Charity Stream so you know her talents already!
It's important to me that I compensate people properly for their work (especially when I'm dragging them out to a film set late at night!), and thanks to your support here on Patreon I was able to pay all of them!

This is the bibliography - it's been once of the most intense research periods I've done for any video. There are a lot of ideas and technical philosophy densely packed into this one, which is partly why I decided to make it in the rather unique way I have... You'll see :P

We shot on location in an old stairwell at night - it was freezing! - with some good friends as an expert film crew. (They prefer to keep behind the scenes, so I've pixellated Mr. X's face in this photo)

My friend Mr. Y was our sound operator and also my body double in some of the reverse shots. If you've seen my video YouTube: Art or Reality? you may recognise that leather jacket and guess who the returning character is!
This was a hard shoot, it was late and cold and everyone put in so much work, but I can't wait to get editing on this one - I think it's going to be really good! It'll be out at the end of this month and $15+ Patrons will get to see it early! I'll have some screenshots from the editing phase for you next week too!
It's good to be back!

I’m frankly terrified of this one. Every video seems to give me something new to worry about. How much worse will it be with a subject I’m *already* worried about.
2020-01-21 12:59:07 +0000 UTCYou always knock it out of the park Olly☺, i'm in a group that does a lot of lockdown and security on devices and I never know exactly what the protocols are for this should be great

2020-01-19 03:46:56 +0000 UTClooking forward to this one, and a big thanks to your whole crew
2020-01-18 12:38:29 +0000 UTCOooooooo!! I'm so pumped. I am literally watching Eric's Cronenberg vid RIGHT NOW.
2020-01-17 23:32:31 +0000 UTCTake a computer/data ethics class if your uni offers one. It was a 600-level elective at my school and I am so glad I did it, I wish it was mandatory for everyone including undergrads. It is all too easy for us technical folks to get so embedded in the solutions that we forget the problems, and wind up making things that do more harm than good.

2020-01-17 16:40:25 +0000 UTCI talk to my students about these topics all the time and I am hyped to watch it

2020-01-17 15:49:05 +0000 UTCThis looks exciting! As (someone studying to be) a computer scientist, I'm quite excited to see how these topics are seen from a philosophical perspective. Normally the context of the philosophy in your videos is something I don't know much about (which has helped me learn about new things, so I'm not complaining!). Can't wait!
