BTS Pics - "Artists & Fandoms"

Hello lovely Patrons!

We've wrapped on my next video, Artists & Fandoms, at long last after a whole round of reshoots! Here are some behind-the-scenes pics from the set. As always these are just for Patrons; please don't repost them anywhere else.

This is my Dionysus costume haha - here you can see the makeup look I went for: gold eyeshadow with a highlight and accentuated brows. I wanted the show to have little hints of gold here and there, hence the laurel wreath and the bracelet and the sofa throw

You'll also have spotted the enormous stuffed liger, haha. We named him 'Bilbo' - in life he was a cross between a lion and a tiger; needless to say I did not kill him myself and would have preferred he stayed alive!

I hired a space called the Kings Head Club in London, which has a lot of old stuffed animals in it. It's bizarre and a little macabre, but if they're just sitting there gathering dust and not getting any deader then I thought 'Why not seize the opportunity?'

If you know your philosophy of art you might have guessed the Dionysus costume is a reference to Nietzsche! We'll be talking him, Plato, Aristotle, and several other thinkers!

But it's not all reclining on a couch with the ancients! This is a video with a lot to say about theatre, so I got myself a GoPro and hit the streets of New York City to film in Times Square talking about some very contemporary aesthetic ideas!

Not just Times Square, but also Shakespeare's Globe! That's right - multiple indoor and outdoor locations across two continents!

I love a good viewfinder shot! That's a LIFX bulb throwing some blue tones down and a very warm lamp providing backlighting.

I love this shot - it's from the first round of filming, before I lost a bunch of footage and had to do reshoots. Fortunately this one survived - it was composed by Alice Quinn Rose, who I was very happy to hire again to help produce this one! thanks to your support here on Patreon I was able to pay her properly too!

It's not just large mammals at the King's Head - they have a whole room just for butterflies where we shot the bits with my second costume...

Initially I wasn't sure about the white bow tie but when I saw it with the butterfly background I was glad I went with it!

It's not all high theatre and wild stuff though - parts of this video get quite serious and for that I felt a more simple, less artificial look was needed

I'm actually really glad that we had to do reshoots - it gave me the chance to rework the script one more time and add in this moment where I can talk about some quite heavy and personal stuff to do with my relationship to the show. It makes for a nice contrast to the rest.

I'm really excited for this video - technically and aesthetically it's gonna be massive, it's got great philosophy, I'm personally invested in it, and it should be an all-around blast. I'll get to work editing it and hopefully have it out in a couple of weeks. I'll have screenshots from the editing phase for you soon!

As a Fandom Boy™, I'm very excited to see this! Always nice to see you work on things that you care about and are excited about sharing :) That kind of passion tends to show in the final product! Also, I know that's not the (whole) point, but damn you look good, especially in the... Butterfly room outfit. Have fun editing!

Can't wait to watch this!

Can’t wait for this one, being in fandom and at (frightening and stressful) times a ‘known person’ in a fandom for most of my life I’ve always wanted to see more people talk about what these communities are and what they mean. Your thoughtfulness and attention to detail is wonderful to see and it always shines through in the finished work. Also my partner is swooning over the legs.

Beautiful!

Wow! Amazing photos! Thank you for your hard work and commitment!

Looks gorgeous, I'm stoked!

Very much looking forward to it! Nietzsche was one of the first philosophers I got into once I started studying philosophy.
