BTS Pics - Ignorance

Hello lovey Patrons!

We just wrapped on my next episode, working title Ignorance! It was a very fun shoot - here are some behind-the-scenes photos from the set!

This episode is about Agnotology (that's the study of ignorance) and I hired a very cool location in North London to film in!

There were great opportunities for warm lighting, orangey tones, and cluttered sets; it should make a nice visual contrast to the clean white of that last episode

In some ways this episode complements the previous one, Ideology; there's some continuity of intellectual themes but you won't need to have seen the previous episode to follow along

The central conceit is that the episode is being filmed inside the magical library of Athena, a room that contains all the knowledge in the universe. And playing the role of Athena herself is Simba the owl!

Simba is a live tawny owl that I hired for the occasion. He was very sweet, very well-behaved, and came with two handlers who made sure he was happy and properly looked after

Whenever we shoot with animals (as we have done a couple of times before ) my priority is making sure they're happy and healthy, so I kept Simba's scenes to a minimum and we took regular breaks between blocks of filming to make sure he was comfortable

Stylist Brian Conway returned to design the outfits for this video. The brief I gave him for this one was 'Modern Athena' - what would Athena look like if she was a modern woman? I gave him a bunch of dark academia moodboard suggestions and we settled on this tweed cape number (We love a cape on Philosophy Tube!)

Makeup artist Camille Nava also came back to make sure I was looking glamorous! It was an early start for us, we were in the chair at 9am sharp to be ready to roll at 11!

The second look of the day allowed her to flex her muscles a bit more!

We're going to be talking about censorship (i.e. deliberately keeping people ignorant) and who better to take aesthetic inspiration from than the Riddler?

In contrast to the first look, this one is a bit more racey! Yes that is a question-mark patterned choker!

The big philosophers I'll be discussing in this episode include John Rawls and Charles Mills - things do get quite technical and into the weeds, which I like!

It was a long old day's filming, I was pretty exhausted by the end of it!

We'll also be talking about an infamous real-life case of censorship...

I think this episode will really come together: it's tight, it's got good structure and some good jokes - I'm looking forward to getting stuck into the editing tomorrow!

I need to find someone who looks at me the way Abi looks at that owl

Eagerly anticipating the (public) premiere...
