Islamophobia: An Analysis

Hello lovely patrons!

It's finally here! I've been wanting to do this one for a while - I hope you enjoy it!

I'm really grateful to all of you: this sort of thing wouldn't be viable on YouTube without crowdfunding, and thanks to you I was not only able to make it but also to pay to have proper script consultants! So THANK YOU!

I admit to being confused by your comment. It seems to presume a dispute where one is not present? I never said and do not believe that racism is special, I agree that misogyny and other forms of bigotry also serve social utility, and I agree that we need to work together to address social needs beyond what I specified in my comment. Is there another criticism or "Yes, and..." to my comment that you were looking to make?

I think different forms of xenophobia give aid to hegemonic power structures in general, and thinking that racism is special misses the point. This is especially true if you can see far enough to include sexism within the greater umbrella of xenophobia. Sure, there aren't really societies that don't have women, or don't have men. But with sufficient segregation - and I assure you there are places that have it - the opposite sex can be a much more fearsome other than someone whose skin is merely a different tone. To be clear, you're absolutely right that racism does all these things. But sexism and other xenophobic crud do crud like this too. It's important that we all work together. What you're looking at absolutely needs to be addressed, but we don't win until we take care of it all.

I really like this video series, I hope to see more. Often times, viewing racism as purely xenophobic anxiety or just individualized personal flaws (which, to be clear, they are) can be a thought-terminating cliché and leave out the social function that different forms of racism serve to hegemonic power structures. Of course, your first video brought up how Antisemitism can misdirect the antagonism of class dynamics into paranoid conspiracy or reactionary backlash; and this video brings up how Islamophobia reinforces security paradigms that benefits military and police violence. But also: anti-Indigenous racism legitimizes colonial violence and capitalist exploitation as beneficial rather than unjust; anti-Asian racism uplifts White cultural institutions (food, music, dress, philosophy, etc) by portraying "Oriental" cultures as bizarre, gross, confusing; anti-Black racism creates an underclass that poor white people can consider them successful than in comparison (something MLK pointed out); anti-Hispanic racism (here in the US) creates a compliant job market that blames Mexicans and Central/South Americans as unfair competition for employment; even anti-European racism ("microagressions" between White people like jokes about the Italians, Irish, French, etc) encourage a sort of "neutral" or "null" culture by making fun of cultural affects that all Europeans do not share, incentivizing white people to "sand down" their cultural differences in order to be perceived as normal.

Great closing music as usual. Credit?

This is a fantastically clever, thorough, and gorgeous video Abi. There isn't a creator on YouTube I'm happier to support - your work just keeps improving. Bravo!

Congrats on an excellent, ethically sourced (paid consultants), deliciously costumed and designed and multi-lingual video! I saw someone comment during the premiere that being a native Russian speaker provided bonus content, so I wonder if the Russian segments weren't purely faithfully subtitled :p

Loving this! Really well made, fascinating, amusing as heck (I nearly choked from laughing at the Keir Starmer line!) and Abi, you look stunning!
