Here are some screenshots from the next episode - I'm super proud of this one, it's come together really well in the edit!
I think as a technical piece of film this one is really strong; there are a lot of little touches like sections with handheld camera and cut-ins that just really lift it
It's also cool to be going in depth on a philosophical issue that really, really impacts people's lives. We've done a few episodes lately that are kindof just for the intellectual sport, like the philosophy of art one, so it's nice to do something a bit more down to earth again
It's also cool to be doing an episode that's personally very important to me. I don't always do this, but I'll be sharing some of my personal thoughts and opinions in this one. I've done my best to make it clear for you when I'm doing that and when I'm talking about facts though. This video gets very emotionally heavy in place.
There's also a running motif of Catch-22, and I'm hoping to use clips from the Hulu series woven throughout. I'm currently exporting a test render to see whether YouTube will let me do that, or whether it'll get ruined by copyright scanners.
Once the final version is rendered and uploaded the subtitlers will go to work - I like my videos to be fully subtitled at release, and this one is long so it may take them a couple of days. Realistically I'm expecting this one will be out for general audiences not this Friday but the following Friday, and $15+ Patrons will probably have a few days to watch it early.
So proud of this one. This is what Philosophy Tube is all about! And thank you so much for being patrons, seriously, this time especially: this kind of content just could not be made except through crowdfunding. Thank you.

I read Catch 22 while I was in Iraq. I was reading and living it. It wasn't until your video that I realized that it had implications beyond the military.

2022-11-09 04:00:23 +0000 UTCI watched the episode on Nebula, and at points it was a really hard watch, it's just hard not to cry. I've been living in Portugal for a bit over a year and while the situation here isn't exactly the same as in the UK, the healthcare system is also deeply in crisis. None of my trans friends are getting treatment through the SNS (equivalent to the NHS) just out of how slow things are and also how your GP can be an obstacle sometimes. I'm also being force to go private healthcare route. On the other hand, the system is been awful for so long that people working good jobs usually get private insurance paid for, as is my case. It doesn't make treatment free for me, but at least it makes it somewhat affordable. Just to exemplify how things seem to currently be in the SNS. On May this year, I went to an STI clinic to get routine STI checks done. In the initial interview, they asked me if I wanted to be evaluated to possibly go on PrEP. I should say, it is not a public clinic, but rather, managed by an association of LGBTQ+ people, so all they can do in regards to medication is generate referrals to doctors in the SNS. So I said yes, they referred me, and a couple of weeks later I got a text telling me of the date of the initial assestment. March 2023. A mere 10 months of wait to be first checked to see if I can go on PrEP. I honestly didn't even consider going the SNS route for HRT because of this.

2022-11-08 07:47:15 +0000 UTCI just found out that the first available appointment I scheduled back in August for January after years of being forced off treatment to assess getting back on HRT... vanished. I was repeatedly told that wasn't possible, despite having records showing that I scheduled the appointment. And they're very sorry, but my complaint has been referred. And I can schedule for April. An appoitnment to assess whether or not I can have healthcare. Then I go on nebula. I'm so tired.
2022-11-08 01:04:59 +0000 UTCJust watched the video via Nebula as well, and the one thing that really struck me was something that the NHS seems to be completely lacking that all other bureaucracies I've ever dealt with possessed: a release valve. There's nobody who can just recognize that, "Oh, we've already fully escalated this problem and they've not gone away and the problem isn't solved and now they're pissed." and just... send it to someone who can solve the problem. And the reason that feature appears to exist in most bureaucracies is to appease people like you specifically to keep you from changing the system.

2022-11-06 23:00:52 +0000 UTCVery excited for this! I'm curious - I'm in the US & I like the idea of Medicare for all (I realize that's just single payer insurance rather than a whole NHS system). One of the arguments I get is that we shouldn't put more government resources into healthcare because the next conservative government can just ruin it. It seems like that's kind of happened in the UK. Are there popular responses to this emerging?
