This came up in a Cory Doctorow essay, but then he is mostly talking about Utilitarianism: https://www.tumblr.com/mostlysignssomeportents/717947885323534336/rich-peoples-gain-is-worth-less-than-poor?source=share

Currently cross-stitching "Don't talk about Lenin at the bank conference" onto a pillow.

You’re such an inspiration. I’m so happy the universe brought us together.

This was video was great - this is only the second Philosophy tube video I have watched but decided to become a Patreon because this is really valuable information - thank you for your hard work!

Garry McDougall

Mark

Great video! May I ask what the track is at the end?

I think maybe watch the whole video? Abi is pretty clear about how the existing systems limit the ability of these philosophies to enact meaningful change.

Sounds like MacAskill doesn't say it explicitly (the coward) but if you tell me you think "building a benevolent AI" is the best use of charity money, I am going to have to ask how much of an idiot you are on a scale of 10 to "you believe in Roko's Basilisk"

Yessss download the knowledge into my brain mommy

Luna

Thanks for the philosophical underpinnings for the math involved in Risk Management. Impact vs. Likelihood.

D&BDomeisen

Irrelevant to the philosophy but that face is giving me big Ultraviolet and Dawn (from the comics) vibes. Also thanks for the Tucker Carlson chatbot nightmare fuel....

Do you think philosophy is allowed to concern itself with political systems? If you do, then, when we're discussing EA, why is it more pertinent to passingly critique longtermism by quoting (what I felt were old-fashioned and ridiculous) lengthy-ish passages about sperm than to question the underlying beliefs inherent in the idealization of the pursuit of wealth via altruism within a system where the generation of wealth is most exploitative towards people who are in need of altruism and, for the most part, the reason for their existence in the first place? If you don't, then, I don't know, sure, I guess.

Just starting it now, really hoping we get a shoutout to Roko's Basilisk 'cuz you know at least some of these EA ghouls are obsessed with it
