hi abi! i joined as a $2/mo member to demonstrate my support for your channel. i don't ever really subscribe to patreons based on perks, though i have subscribed to an artist's $15 tier which mailed out physical artwork to those patrons. i tend to give more money to youtubers who seem less-known and under-funded. i guess i had assumed your channel was quite big and you were floating fine. and btw, higher production does not equal higher quality for me! for example, your tiktok video (while the script was of course of high quality) didn't need to be on that set, shot in that way for you to have earned my patreon subscription. i value philosophy tube because of the well-researched, funny scripts, the theatrical segments (such as videos like "data" and your bit in the judith butler video where you talk to yourself pre-transition). i also watch because you are an amazing presenter. best to ya! thank you for trusting the audience by inviting our opinions! 💗

Signed up to Patreon just so that the youtube series keeps going. Not really interacting with Patreon-only content, so a subscriber like me is very likely to drop off when financial situation changes even a little. Something that'd keep me hooked - substantive, exclusive content, no matter how short. Maybe some - "hey, I just read this, it's super interesting, may not find its way onto the full youtube video, but I wanted to briefly discuss it" type videos. Video quality and production value need not be high for it to command my attention.

I'm joined recently because I want to support the work in general and you listed this platform as the alternative to YouTube. Not interested in Perks much. I'd like to support more than I am but money is tight. I've been disabled since birth and have close ones who have dealt with various aspects of lgbtq right. The point is I appreciate your perspective and would like some opportunity to engage with you and your supporters more. But I also mindful of comments you made about distinct characteristics of parasocial relationships for better and worse. So I'm just not sure how that could be facilitated constructively. Sorry to ramble but it's just that I have so many things would be very refreshing to discuss with you but that would create a lot of demands on your side

I just signed up because I saw you post this on other platforms. I don't really care about the benefits (even though they're cool), I signed up because your work is very important to me and I want you to be able to continue to do your work. I'm only patron to one other creator for the same reason: that I fear they won't be able to keep going without patrons and I really want them to. Also, I only joined at the lowest tier and I won't really be considering moving it up until I'm done with university and earning more money. If I had the money, I would gladly give much more.

I moved my pledge up after watching an episode I liked, and I might move it down if there's little to no activity and I need to start cutting back because I'm not saving enough money. I don't pay too much attention to the tiers except for when the minimum tier is a bit too high compared to the amount of time I engage with the creator's work.

Doing shorter videos where you talk about current issues (from a philosophical lens) or talking about old videos to see if your opinion has changed or stayed the same could be really cool. I'm subscribed to Contrapoints LOVE her tangents, keeps me paying. This could be a great way to add additional content without it needing to be so formatted/artistic and gives you room to update your thoughts if needed.

Hi, I feel like we haven't really finished our conversation last time, but maybe you feel otherwise and that's fine. I doubt the drop in patreon is because of the issues I raised. I think lower tiers could definitely help. I also think generating more content could increase engagement. Maybe short videos about more specific, lighter issues, like the philosophy of a single book or film, or a revisit of your older videos is something you could squeeze in?

I don't tend to support creators for the perks and extras. I just believe it's the right thing to do to support them financially because they put in a lot of work to make high-quality things that I value personally and regularly engage with. I don't tend to check video descriptions, so when Patreon links are just listed there I may not notice them. I did like in the NHS trans healthcare video when you bluntly promo'd the patreon—I always like when people are straightforward and honest with things like this. I'm still at the $2 tier because I try to directly support as many creators as I can, which winds up with me giving more people less money. I would increase my pledges across the board if my income increased. I generally don't ever reduce patreon contributions; I start low and increase only once I'm sure I can. If I no longer engaged with a creator's work at all, I might cancel my contribution altogether, but I've only done that once in many years—I currently have creators I don't engage with much anymore whom I still support since the low-and-broad approach is sustainable for me financially.

There's a glut of stuffy professors, fiery professors, lectures on tape, and folks who masquerade as thinkers out there. Your combination of content, style, narrative voice (literally and figuratively), and your ability to ground topics in personal experience is unique and valuable. So, I joined. Like some others, I don't join Patreon feeds for the perks. I have little clue about your overall business model, so I am loathe to offer any advice in that area. More "dissecting / skewering the posers" content might be a draw, but it could get old. It's not like you'd ever run out of posers to skewer and/or dissect. Collaborations with other creators can create new exposure (and, I'm pretty sure, all LegalEagle followers love you ;-). At the risk of (shudder) politics, I'd be fascinated to see what a meeting of minds with Cornel West would be like. I'm not sure if I've directly shared any Patreon links in my social media feeds so far or what would make me feel strongly enough to do that, but I am happy to share high-quality content that includes Patreon links or mentions. My diversified portfolio of Patreon feeds (geez, pretentious much?) is at a comfortable level where I can continue through most foreseeable, financial circumstances. If I ever need to make cuts, PhilosophyTube will not be anywhere near the top of the list.

I'm a 15+ member since 2022 and I really enjoy being able to watch PT episodes before anyone else. I can only guess, but I can imagine canceling one's Patreon subscription if say, Nebula subscribers get access to episodes even earlier than we do. I haven't canceled mine because I admire your work and want to contribute, but it would be nice to get early access for Patrons episodes at the same time that the ep drops on Nebula.

I joined your patreon years ago because your work in youtube was so valuable to me that I wanted to contribute to the effort of letting you keep on doing this for a living. This is the reason why I've subscribed to all the creators I support here, it's not about the perks so much, it's strictly about paying a small fraction of your "salary" because I want your content or art to be created. What helps me sign up in general is lower tiers and sometimes per-show tiers. This is how I can subscribe and support several creators without it burdening on my finances. What drives me to sign up is the knowledge that my contribution is probably essential for the continuation of a show or a podcast. One-time contributions can also be great for me since I can sometimes give a little more (the superchats would be great for that, only they're not supported where I live) As for perks, I'm not into those too much to be honest. Some creators share more thoughts and discussions, and those are nice sometimes but I never "conditioned" my subscription on those, especially since I know they can take so much time and effort to maintain. I am a fan of anything that I can download for further reading! So if I value a creator and a subscription will let me read more from that brain - it mighy encourage me to subscribe if I am financially able.

Over there she's been doing a small reading group which has been crazy interesting--as it's valuable to hear the perspectives of all the really well-educated people in her audience. Currently we're reading "Against Method" which is a difficult text about the history and philosophy of science. I think that Philosophy Tube would be a great space for something similar.

For me, I signed up because I believe in your mission and genuinely love and appreciate the professional creativity and intellectual content that is conistantly delivered here. A patron of the arts, as it were. Yes, I did start at a lower tier, and have slowly upped it over time to my current level, both due to the increase in funds on my end and a want to continue to see content like this thrive and grow. Especially for certain videos like Catch-22 NHS, Transhumanism, and the dual-you video really showed your creativity and passion for the field. You've never let us down, and I hope to see even more amazing work in the future for as long as you'd like to do so. In regards to getting others to join up, I do share where possible, and even have a Nebula subscription as well. The cross-creator works that I see over time, both in lending voices and appearance (the Identiteaze premiere was amazing to attend, btw), can also help with that. If you'd want others that I know to join up, you'd need a contradictory level of both longer form videos with deeper, more advanced-level content, and shorter, more bite-sized videos that could be consumed on the road/before bed/shorter attentions. And, as for restructuring individual tiers on the whole, if I could wave a magic wand, I'd like to see even more BTS stuff on the process of just how an individual episode's made. Though this is does come with the caveat that it would cause more overhead in terms of time and energy, so it's just a wish at best. And, in regards to the $40 tier, if one's unable to make a stream due to scheduling, it somewhat invalidates the tier in and of itself.

I promise I don’t mean this in a harsh way, but because of social media engagement, you are not always top of mind. I know some people lol let’s call them older people see promoting things like Patreon as groveling. I see it more as a Renaissance era return to the artist/patron relationship. You are obviously a renaissance human being. Don’t worry about people leaving Patreon, think about bringing more people to Patreon. My suggestion would be doing a Patreon commercial for social media and I hate calling it a commercial, but it’s plain language I can think of. And also figure out how to do, some collaborations with other artists. There’s a half a dozen marketing words for individuals that leave a service. I would never accuse you of pandering to keep people, but you have such an amazing outreach to drive engagement, I do realize it’s more work, but I think that is your best way forward. Especially now for someone involved with dragons! I’m a designer that’s worked in several marketing departments. Please reach out to me if you want to have a further conversation about this. I am a fan of physical knick knacks (it's my crow brain ). Like 2 to 3 sticker with illustrations of characters and themes of recent videos. Oh, also, I sign up to patreons at a max level that includes recurring perks or recognition, but not usually one time benefits. I only sign up for folks that I watch regularly because I feel like I should pay creators for the content I watch. I also got a lifetime nebula subscription through your link, so thanks for that! If you had a recurring thing that did not require me to be online for a Livestream, I would likely give more. So, something I would enjoy is, in addition to your other livestreams, maybe answering questions on a kind of Philosophy Office Hours. Where you could answer more targeted questions from a certain tier level submitted over the course of a couple months. I know Michael Burns over at Wisecrack does this occasionally, but I like getting hot takes from philosophy inclined YouTubers. So yeah, maybe some kind of FAQ or Office Hours would be good! I pledged after the Identity video, because I think you said you were worried about losing support and I loved your content and wanted to support you. In general, with Patreon and other creator subscription models, I tend to pledge not to obtain specific rewards (although getting my name in a video is a nice ego boost) but because I like the creator’s overall “project” and want to support their general career as a creator. I don’t mind if some of the content isn’t of interest, although if a creator really changed course I might decide to stop pledging. I don’t post a lot on social media so I don’t see myself sharing a creator’s Patreon there (and frankly I doubt it would be very effective because I’m not exactly an influencer, lol) Also, reading others comments has been really interesting - I hadn’t thought about potential conflicts between paying for Nebula vs. pledging on Patreon but I can definitely see how people would prefer to do one but not the other if the content you get is more or less the same. I wonder how other creators who use both platforms navigate it?

If I had less money for whatever reason, you might be high on the list of subscriptions to stop. Why? Not because of the quality or number of videos! I really enjoy philosophy tube. Weirdly, it's because you seem to be doing well? Patreon, to me, is not just about supporting a specific kind of content, but also about supporting a creator in general. You've been posting a lot about all the cool stuff you've been doing (acting, writing, producing), which makes me think "great! She does not need my money anymore!". Your post made me realize: Abigail might be doing great, but philosophy tube might not. These are two separate things. Perhaps more people need this insight to stay onboard? Also, saying "we need more money" often works. It has made me think about upping my tier.

I don't subscribe to any Patreons for perks, I just do to support creators. However, I am also subscribed to a LOT of Patreons and my monthly $150 bill is a lot higher than I'd like. I will occasionally go through the list and try to decide who I can drop, but when evaluating on an individual basis I can't bring myself to remove them. I've been thinking for a while that I might need to just unsubscribe from everyone, but I know I'll just start adding people back. I don't know how many folks are in a similar place as me where we want to support creators but there are also way too many people we want to support, but that's where I'm at.

Why might I increase my pledge? – Because better personal financial circumstances allow it. Why did I sign up to the Philosophy Tube Pareon? – Purely to support the channel. It's something I want to exist, and to continue existing. Supporting financially seems like a concrete way to contribute to that. I rarely have the time to engage with the extras/benefits on Patreon (BTS pics, early access, etc) and would probably not miss them if they were gone. They're not the reason I pledge; for me, they're a minor perk at most.

I am not subscribing for any perks. I liked your content, found it educational, and felt its fair to pay. Like I also donate to Wikipedia for the same reason but dont expect to get any different contents. I think some churn in subscribers is just normal as peoples interest changes, and their priorities change. It must be tough to present educational material that is competing with tiktoks and other sensational style videos. I think a better statistic would be 'people who subscribe, how many people actually watch it'. If you can look who is watching (and what they are watching), then perhaps that can help with above questions.

I signed up some time ago because I have always found your work educational and creative, so I kept coming back to rewatch a lot of your videos – a sure sign that there was something there I wanted to re-experience. I wanted to back you directly, not YouTube. I was never interested in Patreon perks, so if I ever pledged up, it would be purely to provide more support to the kind of work you do. Unfortunately, as I live in a country with a different standard of life than many Western European countries, the lowest pledge has been all I could afford. I used to have Nebula, too, and loved it but job insecurity forced me to cancel. I am waiting for my finances to stabilize so I can support you and other great creators even more.

Hey Abi, I cancelled all but one of my Patreon Memberships this month due to a change in my finances (in France, income taxes arrive in September). I do intend to re-pledge as soon as I can (which will probably be after Christmas). To answer the questions that were relevant to me : - When I up any pledge for any creator, it's generally, that there is a specific project I want to back. I can up it for a few months because they are working on this or that, and I know/hope a few more $ will make a difference. - I signed up to your Patreon because I wanted to help develop your YouTube channel. The high production value and the multiple successes you've enjoyed recently might be giving off the vibe you don't need the financial patronage anymore...? Between The Prince, DEx and Game of Thrones, people might be feeling their money would help someone smaller more...? I just moved my pledge up - largely, I didn't realize I was on the lowest tier! I signed up when I was still a master's student and then just never thought much about it after that. I think having something posted that's exclusive to higher patreon tiers can help get people to up their pledge, but ofc finding a way to do that without increasing your workload is tricky.

I am a free member now but I was previously part of a paid tier and, at the risk of some backlash, I can say that the biggest reason for going to the free tier is because you are so successful now and I wanted to support other smaller creators who are far more reliant on their Patreon supporters for their art. Fairly certain your video on "Data" is what originally inspired me to join the Patreon crew (still one of my favorite artistic works on the subject). I think that sort of original composition can definitely win over new folks. I have sent several of your videos to my friends privately and some of them are now your patrons, but I do not post publicly to any social media whatsoever.

Hi so I’m someone who did actually cancel recently because my financial situation changed. Honestly there’s not a lot I can say other than the economy is bad times apparently. When one reaches the point of measuring prices in the number of meals this would buy, it’s kinda time to cut some expenses. Personally, I never really used the Patreon benefits even when I had them, it was mostly a “I support this show” sort of thing. I’ll probably become a paying patron again if my financial situation ever improves, and the deciding factor has more to do with “Is Philosophy Tube still a show I watch” more than any benefits on Patreon.

I pledged because your content teaches me about things I didn’t even know I wanted to learn. Sure, there’s the philosophy itself, but so much of your content teaches me about myself, and how I understand my own identity. Your work treats me like I’m an intelligent human being who doesn’t know the content, and not like I’m unintelligent because I don’t know. I know that in my case, sometimes it can be hard to go through the back catalog if I’m looking for a quick primer on a specific philosopher or school of thought. Would there be any value in assembling more short-form Philosophy Tube; a Philosophy Straw, if you will? Something like a teaser for the show, that grabs interest and links to the longer-form material? I’ll do my best to keep supporting as long as I can, especially if it helps others learn at no cost to them.

I would love to pledge more, but I'm broke. I signed up because I love your work and I want to support it (and you). I'm not sure what motivates someone beyond that. I do share your vids on my socials, I'm just not on socials very much. The tiers honestly don't matter to me because I can only afford the lowest one no matter what. If I were flush, then I might care, but I probably never will be. As with most things in my life, it's not about what I want to do, it's about what I can afford to do. If I had a bunch more disposable income, I'd throw more money at you (and others), but as you point out, there's not much you can do about that. I hope you can keep making your awesome content, and I hope there are richer folks out there willing to support it!

I...just joined. This is second fastest I have ever decided to support a creator. I have a hard time watching - what is produced here is so good, and so thought provoking, I have had to frequently pause, think, go back, watch again...and it's wonderful. I did not have any idea that philosophy encompassed so many things that I struggle to talk about with other people. So, I don't have any idea how to update patreon experience, because I'm new to it. I'm in the US, and I'm watching "I Emailed My Doctor 133 Times: The Crisis In British Healthcare." I have seen people argue against public healthcare HERE because of the wait times THERE. This is the most in depth explanation I've seen. Here is the tragic tale away I'm getting so far - Britain spends less per person in healthcare, people have a right to healthcare - and still go without. The US medical system and patients spend more money per person and gets worse outcomes - basically, people are not getting care. I would have to ask my trans friends about the specific difficulty with getting treatment. I do know that a friend of mine was a driver for someone who had some form of gender affirming surgery in Canada - instead of here in the US. So there HAVE to be issues that prevent trans people from getting care here, too. This is just ONE of the videos that have given me this much to think about - and potentially much to do. More people need to see what is here.

Knowing that my contribution means "high production values" is actually not very motivating at all. But hearing that my contributions pay for fair wages for artists of a variety of sorts (including yourself!) motivated the hell out of me! They seem like they should mean the same thing but it was an episode where you specifically called out the labor involved and that patreon money compensated these people.. that got me. Which is embarrassing but true. An associated thought: do you suppose people see a long list of names or a high number of patrons and assume "oh she must be doing quite well, no need for my $5"?

I can't afford the subscription above lowest tier as my medical bills take all my disability pension and I'm not medically fit to work. I'd love to go higher but the currency conversion means I'm paying double and that's far too much unfortunately because I think you're brilliant. Perks don't sway my vote nor do I engage in social media much, but I have recommended you to the people in my life which means every social worker, doctor and nurse I've met in the last 4 years has watched you. Also, when I came out as trans which was around the same time as you I doubled my efforts. Many have since told me they loved your channel BTW! Here in Oz much like the UK everything has increased in price so much that I've been forced to make ridiculous choices like weighing up food vs meds. I had several low tier subs. I kept 3 free tier subs and 1 flat tier sub but everyone else was cancelled, including KJB sadly. I would love to support you more if the Govt ever payed disability pensions so that it covered realistic expenses - which should include money for something other than medical expenses! - rather than the pitance it is at the moment. I deeply value you as a creator and appreciate your YouTube channel and it really helped me during my transitioning. I'll never be able to repay you for that. I’m a lowest tier Patreon, and I also got a Nebula lifetime membership via your affiliate link some time ago. Why did I sign up to your Patreon? I liked your work. And I’ve been supporting independent creators for years using all kinds of methods: Kickstarter, Indiegogo, Humble Bundle (for video games and ebooks), Patreon, YouTube memberships, several tipping services which no longer exist, buying merch, buying physical books (publishing a book is easier when your standard content is web comics instead of videos 🙂),… I prefer to give a small amount to more people if possible. And I do it because I want to support their work. I don’t visit Patreon that often, so I usually don’t see extra content. I don’t like creators putting main content behind a paywall, I prefer paying so others can get free content. Perks like behind the scenes, bloopers, bits that didn’t make the final cut,… are of course ok. I actually don’t like all those supporter’s names at the end of YouTube videos, and I absolutely see no reason for my name to appear in there. You’re the only YouTuber I support via Patreon. I support several others using YouTube memberships. For me this has the benefit of members-only videos appearing in my subscriptions feed, which is the main method I use for watching YouTube. What would prompt me to increase my monthly pledge? You asking. And you did here. I saw the only advantage of the next tier would be my name in the credits, so I didn’t change tiers, I just increased my monthly pledge in the lowest tier to €5.

I try to think of supporting creators on Patreon in original "patron of the arts" sense. I've got an ok job, I can afford to pay people to make stuff I like. I will admit however that I occasionally support people or select amounts based on the perks. The big one I think sells most people is exclusive content for subscribers. My favorites are more casual/lower production quality stuff in the same genre as the creators' normal videos. I'm guessing this would be super hard for you given your schedule but maybe something more in the style of your streams than a full video, sitting at your desk chatting about a topic, or even revisiting a topic from a prior video where you've learned something new/have additional thoughts.

Would the younger me have benefited if this content was around when I was a teenager/20s? 2. Could this content be funded through a capitalist system of ad revenue and endorsements, or is it reliant on private donations? Yes to both those get a few dollars a month. I am on a limited income right now. I’d prefer 2 really good deep dives into a topic video essays per year, than lots of updates or perks.

There are unfortunately many different creators that I'd like to support. Josh strife Hayes has a method that I like which is offering a benefitless tier of 1£ per month. I have no reason to lower my pledge but for someone who wants to support but can't afford the 5. Having that lower barrier to entry may encourage people to jump on that otherwise wouldn't have. Alternatively may retain people that would have jumped ship for financial reasons as well.

It might only be a few months but I’ll do what I can. I’m one of those people who isn’t so much subscribing for content as I am for supporting you, but if l had to say something, I’d love a bibliography from your videos or a book recommendation that is additional to the content mentioned in the video but related to it. I dont want you to have to put in too much extra work on top of what you’re already doing but that would keep me engaged:) you’re always amazing!

Hi Abi. My motivation to sign up for Philosophy Tube Patreon was I liked you and I enjoyed your content and wanted to support that. Later, I also signed up for Nebula, primarily because I wanted to see The Prince and also as another means of support. I did increase my pledge because I liked the recognition of being on your Instagram sheet. I think a restructuring of the tiers could be a motivating factor for sure. Personally I find the thank you card attractive, but just can't afford that much on a monthly basis. I have turned friends on to Philosophy Tube and they enjoy it, but are not Patrons. Free tier here. I'm not a paid subscriber because I feel like I may have "outgrown" Philosophy Tube a little bit. I don't mean that as a negative. More as a "I started college taking introductory classes, and moved on to higher level classes." I've learned to do my own reading, and research, living, and thinking, so the new Philosophy Tube video is less "A whole new way of looking at the world, and she's got a fun vibe/outfit," and more "Yeah, I'm aware of what she's talking about, and she's got a fun vibe/outfit." If I were to look at who I do pay money to for their content they either put out a ton of iterative content showing process, very long form content (2-3+ hour deep dives) that may take 6 months-1 year to produce but the singular piece feels worth the total cost paid for those months, or weekly content that feels like a traditional piece of entertainment. A final thought - I think less is more in terms of advertising/asking for support. If a creator says "Hey, this stuff isn't great for ad revenue, I have a patreon." I'll definitely consider subscribing. But you tend to make a more in-depth meaningful/morality argument to support you, which dissuades me the longer it goes on. Additionally, you mix all of your work into your Philosophy Tube videos. That muddies the waters and can leave a bad taste in my mouth. I understand that Philosophy Tube is the most eyes you can get to promote your other endeavors, but at best it feels like a clunky pivot, and at worst it cheapens and detracts from the more important topics in the actual video.

IIRC, I increased my monthly pledge for the satisfaction of seeing my own name in credits and social media shout outs. It is a silly perk, but seems to be a consistent offering across Patreon offerings. Me personally, what would tempt me to upgrade further would be something like a study resource for each new video: annotated bibliography, discussion topics, reflection questions, your recommendations on next steps to take ideas on, etc. Other folks might be interested in access to a private Discord or other discussion forum.

Personally, I had to cancel my subscription because it renews on the first. I often don't have money to spare on the first, so it's important for my subscriptions to have flexible start/end dates. Patreon seems to have two models. One where the sub renews on the first of each month and one where it renews on the same day of the month as when you signed up. Some More News, for example,uses the latter model. It might be easier for some of us with more limited incomes to maintain our subscriptions if we can arrange for them to renew closer to our respective pay days. I'm not sure how great of an effect such a change would have, but it would at least help me stay subbed.

What made you sign up: The production quality is phenomenal, and it feels like something that is trying to be good for the public. I'm willing to chip in $2 for that. Would you ever share a creator's Patreon: I don't use social media that way. I used to hang out on Reddit, and I'm in the comments section sometimes, but I don't have connections with specific people on any platform. Are there any new tiers or restructuring of tiers you'd like to see: This is the first time I've signed into Patreon in months. I use this purely as a way to send you (and a few other creators I like) small amounts of money. If I had found you today, I don't know that I would have joined the Patreon because you look too successful to need my two dollars. I'm not trying to defend this position, I just hope that's useful information.

Hi Abi, I am only subscribed to 4 people's Patreons and the total amount that comes out of my bank account each month is $10. I know that if I were to commit to more than that, it would start to feel like something I need to get rid of when I look at my household budget. I would rather be able to promise I can give $2-3 a month indefinitely, rather than hem and haw every time my work situation changes or I have to take on a new recurring expense elsewhere. As for why you are one of those 4 subscriptions, it's because my partner and I are both very impressed by the amount of thought and effort you put into your videos, and we really appreciate the amazing work you are doing for the trans community. <3 Gigi

I can only speak for myself but I consider stopping the support I give you because of the anti-Israel content you started putting in your videos. I watch YouTube with a delay of about 3 months because I was busy for some period, couldn't shrink my "watch later" playlist and don't want to skip videos so I didn't watch your last of your main videos yet, but I considered stopping my support because of the previous one (the one about Butler) and commented about it both here and on YouTube (I'm the second latest comment on Patreon) but neither you nor anyone else replied to me. I decided I'd give you until you post a new main video to see if this a real trend or a slip up and try to see if I can get you to explain yourself by commenting on that video when it's new before I stop my support, but maybe other people decided that's enough right when you started to post what to me seems like shit with no factual basis about my country. I'll be glad if you respond to my original comment on the video about Butler here on Patreon (or on YouTube if you prefer for some reason to have the final word on a lonely comment thread in the public internet, although in that case I won't be able to reply because YouTube recommendations become annoying if I rewatch a video). If not I'll continue with my original plan, which is stopping the support after your next main video if you don't reply to the comment I plan to post about it on Patreon until my next payment after it. I also had people thinking I'm a Marxist or understand anything about LefTube because they saw I was supporting you while I'm here mostly because I value interesting philosophy, so that's also something, but that was many years ago and so probably unrelated to your recent drop in supporters.

Interesting questions. Here’s a long-winded answer to one of them: I’m a free member, and what prompts me to pledge money is a combination of how much I get out of the free content, how much extra content I’m missing if I don’t pledge, and how much a creator needs the funds. I give the most to my favorite YouTube creator duo EVER that also seems to barely make rent every month, the second most to a podcast that has a whole extra Patreon podcast that’s the same quality as the free one. And then there’s one YouTuber I really like who needs the money. I stopped pledging to her when she stopped making videos and was just gonna do music, but re-pledged when she started videos again. For you, I like a decent amount of your free content, you say your patreon is on the decline…at the same time, you seem to have a large network. You are, as your dad says, “easy to work with,” at least you seem to be from the parasocial window we have. To be completely honest, if I’m gonna add another Patreon pledge, the next one is gonna be somebody with a smaller network than you who is not as easy to work with, but still makes content I love. I’m doing okay financially right now, but I’m not easy to work with, so I have to be prepared for the worst.

- I signed up in 2021, I can't remember exactly what prompted it but that you'd been a creator I'd enjoyed for a while and had the ability to support! - Like many, I tend to subscribe at lower tiers unless there is specifically something I want at higher tiers - bonus episodes to a podcast, for example. I try to support more creators at lower tiers than fewer at higher tiers. Also, I am a Nebula subscriber as well. - I have bumped my subscription to creators at other tiers in the past because they asked. E.g. One podcast I like removed new subscriptions from the tier I was at because it was "no longer financially viable" but let everyone who was still there keep subscribing; I bumped my subscription when I could because they had asked. So, consider asking on your socials! - I would be more likely to share a Patreon if there was some sort of exclusive content there, e.g. Alexander Avila's podcast, the Fansplaining special episodes, the Hbomb or Contrapoints exclusives. If no exclusives, I am more likely to share someone's videos, or Nebula, as I feel that people respond better to a value proposition. - Honestly I do think exclusives would be more likely to get people to sign up. It looks like all your BTS posts on here are available to both free and paid subscribers. If there were only short posts available to free subscribers and longer posts available to paid subscribers, that might do it. - I would also consider subscribing or upping tier if Patreon could be a collation of your other socials, e.g. I didn't know you posted outfit notes on your Twitter until I saw it in a comment on this post. I don't have Twitter and Insta, I'm just a tumblr gremlin, so using this as a way to get all your stuff would be awesome. - Re $40 tier: didn't even know this existed, and honestly with the Superchat feature on Youtube primarily being used as a way for people to ask you questions, it feels redundant to me. I'm not at this tier, though, so I can't comment further. In terms of potential Patreon content: - Additional BTS stuff, this is what I love most about your Patreon. Commenting on choices for sets, rationale for outfits. - Little video tours (like 5 minutes) of the shoots, which could then be cut down to 1 min as a teaser/promo for Tiktok/YT and end with a Patreon plug. Or the reverse, as I think you might already do this a little for TikTok from the sets, extend it a little longer and put the extended cut on Patreon. - Others mentioned posts about book suggestions - I think posts about "for X episode I'm reading this book. Here are some freeform thoughts. What do you all think?" Would be a good post for paid subscribers at a certain tier. Drives community engagement in a different, more directed way than a Discord. - Some creators that have moved towards less frequent releases post early drafts of videos on their Patreon. Folding Ideas also recently posted a script read to Patreon, for community feedback on the details. Your editing process seems pretty streamlined, so that might not be a help, but it might not be that much extra work to do. - Agree with others saying any short freeform content in general would work. - Stream-like exclusives: FD Signifire has movie watchalongs, for example. - Unlikely because it means more work, but having one or two exclusive videos that SOLELY exist on your Patreon, not Nebula, not Youtube. You could do what Verilybitchie has just done and post a segment of an exclusive video on the public feeds, and say "subscribe here to get the rest". - For any future collabs, short informal chat with the creators you work with about the collab. Other things: being clear in the videos or descriptions what you use the Patreon for, i.e. why it is helpful if people sign up to it specifically, can be valuable too! I know that paywalling things kind of goes against the PhilosophyTube ethos, but honestly in this age of content saturation I do think that sometimes having that THING push e.g. "Hbomb's Myst video" or "bonus podcast about House MD" is necessary for people.

Hello Abigail. I subscribed ages ago, having an interest in Philosophy from my college days (which are long, long past at this point). If I recall correctly, I subscribed because you were going to acting school and needed subscribers to keep the channel going. I actually joined Patreon because of that request, and I have no plans to leave or reduce my contribution. You ask about things that might be nice additions for patrons, and while I appreciate the thought, I generally view Patreon as a "set and forget" thing. I have a few others that I support here as well, and unless they send an email, I don't even visit the site. What that means to me is that I don't see things that get posted here with any regularity. Others will, of course, and I appreciate the value of such posts to engage and enlarge your audience. But I worry that adding more work could take away from all the other things you are doing. Striking that balance is not a simple thing for anyone, so please keep an eye on that. You ask if we might share your videos with others. I have, in the past, but I face a challenge due to my age. Your theatrical turn is great, but some of the looks you've used would - well, let's just say my mom might not approve. ;) Being ancient myself, the people I can share them with are older too, and that's the rub in my case. (I have my own Patreon which brings in [hold on to your bonnet] US$14 a month :) ) When I lost that job I had to drop all my Patreon subscriptions, and I felt really bad about it. I'm a free member, but unfortunately I can't afford to subscribe. More accurately, I can't afford to subscribe to all the creators I'd like to subscribe to. For a long time now I've wished Patreon had an option to donate $X total a month, select which creators you'd like to divvy that between, totaling Y, and then automatically donated $X/Y a month to each of those creators. As is I can't afford to donate even $Y a month, because that would be something like $50, and that's nearly half my monthly income. I am subscribed to Nebula, however, because so many of my favorite creators are there.

I joined a very long time ago, after watching your 'men, abuse, trauma' video. Having survived an abusive relationship, I saw a lot of myself in that video—it expressed so many things that I (as an autistic person) struggled to express on my own. You mentioned how making YouTube videos helped you to leave that situation, and since I was in a place where I could afford to offer my own support, I did. The worry about 'changing up patreon to attract more paying subs/higher tiers' is that it may just mean more work. That said, the thing I'd like is also tricky, because of copyright & access... I'd love to see at the $5-10 dollar range a 'reading club' where you have links to texts you're reading for upcoming episodes, especially stuff in the 'journal article' page range, and approachable. Bonus points if it were things you found interesting, but ultimately don't fit in the end narrative for whatever reason. I'm sure you already have that kind of working bibliography, but also so much of it gets locked in journal paywall hell, or is just so dense that if you aren't already conversant with the applicable underlying philosophy, it's a bad read. That said, that kind of 'sneak peak' as you're working up new episodes wouldn't be a -huge- new ask, but it's also a nice value add.

hi abi! honestly, i try to subscribe to as many $1/$2 tiers as possible with my limited budget, and as others have mentioned, when i subscribed to nebula i had to pick somewhere to compensate until i can afford otherwise. obviously you dont reap the benefit of the entire nebula subscription in the same way as a patreon pledge, but its less about what you could offer as an incentive imo and more about the fact that we're all poor and getting poorer for no real reason other than line must go up, ykno? on a purely abstract level, though, to echo what at least one other person has said: im much less interested in 'your name in the credits' style rewards and much more enticed by some sort of bonus content/insight - not necessarily a whole extra video or podcast though! i really enjoyed your bts photos; as another kind of example, an 'abi's book of the month' where you provide a brief writeup/review for something you've read recently (either for fun or for an upcoming video) would also be super appealing. obviously this is still adding more to your plate, but maybe it's aligned enough with your existing scriptwriting/production workflow that it wouldn't tax you too much. i personally am less a fan of 'stream recap/highlight' videos in general, but since it seems you're also covering book recommendations there maybe it could overlap somewhat there. as a worst-case scenario, i can at least speak for a section of your viewers who watches your work because they enjoy how you make your arguments and the way you break down and synthesize ideas. if the production scope of the videos narrows a bit (much as i love all your costumes and makeup styles!!), i know i will not be the only one still watching. while it feels weird to go back and watch your pre-transition videos, 'witchcraft, gender, & marxism' and 'steve bannon' come to mind as narrower than your current degree of production, but still exceptionally well-made, visually compelling, and with cogent arguments to boot.

I will, hopefully, be upping my pledge sometime next year once I get a full-time job. I'll be doing so because I think your work is extremely important - as someone in academia, I am a huge fan of giving your education away for free. For me, it isn't about any particular perks, unlike other creators I pledge to for D&D stuff I don't expect too much from video creators beyond the videos. I don't even watch your live streams, haha, but I know I am probably in the minority. I try to promote your videos as often as I can, but I don't promote your Patreon - mostly because it is either my students I promote your work to with select videos that apply to the course material or my friends who I know don't have as much discretionary spending as I do. Right now, I am on the 5$ a month tier but paying for a yearly subscription and I would probably up my pledge to 10$ a month paying yearly once I'm off my graduate student stipend and into a real job.

I used to wait months excited for each episode to be released it was like a movie like a ongoing plot it was so fun. It’s been a year since I noticed a change in themes and felt I was not the target audience. I tend to think of Patreon as another Netflix/Prime/Nebula type subscription (though I spend way more on Patreon) where I can distribute the money to only the creators I follow. I'd love to increase my subscriptions, but unless my boss gives me a huge raise, I can't really increase my pledges for one creator without dropping another. For why I signed up in the first place: A bunch of your videos had been in my feed for a while and I finally clicked on one and then another. So I subscribed to your channel. The very next video you dropped was your coming out video. While you weren't the first channel I followed that talked about it, you are the one who changed my opinion from an intellectual acceptance to it being a core value. As someone in his 40s with a pretty established viewpoint, it's rare and wonderful to get that kind of perspective shift. I signed up for your Patreon that day and I'm not going anywhere.

I'm subscribed to a bunch of creators at the lowers tiers of 1 or 2 bucks a month because I'd rather spread it around a bunch of people rather than have to be picky with who gets what. By keeping individual pledges low I can just 'fire and forget' the money and support the creators consistently over a long period of time. The only time I've ever cancelled a pledge was when the creator stopped making the content I'd signed up for in the first place. There is also a wider point about 'content saturation' where there's simply too much stuff to keep up with and some things fall by the wayside as there literally isn't time enough in the day to watch it all. I've no idea what the right way to do things is but if I had to hazard a guess I'd say this: Concentrate on making the core product well and to a reasonable time scale. Don't get bogged down with mega-projects and side-content if they aren't explicitly worth the time/resource investment. I don't know if channels like PT are kept afloat by small numbers of high rollers or masses of smaller donors but I'd suggest trusting that the people backing you do so because they like the core product/personality behind the patreon and don't spread yourself too thin working on things people didn't ask for.

I'm at the £2 tier because I got a Nebula membership for The Prince, and that gave me the early episode access I would have otherwise upgraded for once I had the money. I'm considering going up to £50 for a month to treat myself to a book for Christmas or something, but there's not much in-between those two tiers that appeals to me - If I have a question for the livestream I just take my chances you'll see it in the comment section - I know you're too much of an egalitarian to actually /require/ people to pay to have their questions answered! 😅 Ideas for new tiers: Access to episode bloopers, but then that sort of undercuts the value of a Nebula subscription. Perhaps the opportunity to suggest topics for new videos, but then that means your future content is somewhat decided by the people who can afford the fee... More book reviews??? What if you tried to get interviews with some of the philosophers you study/reference in the episodes, and then you upload those discussions as bonus content after the episode their work was featured in has aired? (I have no idea how feasible this is) Lastly, and thank you for reading this far, but will the "Don't Play With Matches" pins ever be back on the merch store? I want one so badly I am prepared to buy several to justify the cost to you of having them made. Even if you have any old ones just lying around, I will upgrade my membership to the £100 tier if it meant I could get my hands on one, pretty pretty please! 🥹

I've been a member since August 2021 at the lowest tier. I became a patron because I love your work, wanted to support it, and also I wanted those sweet sweet BTS posts. Honestly, I would have pledged at least $5 a month to you, except I became a patron of your channel and KJB at the same time and I obviously needed to pledge enough to get the bonus episodes over there, and I didn't feel like I had enough money to do both at the time. I still don't have a ton of money, I probably wouldn't be able to go above the $5 tier, but I would definitely bump up a tier for even a pretty small reward. A quick little video or voice note about literally anything you'd want to talk about each month, I know you mentioned a book list for a higher tier but even something simple like a quick recommendation for one book and why, or even like...a compilation of some of your tweets that month? Maybe that's just me, but I don't go on Twitter anymore and I miss following you. Or even just like...a picture of your favorite background prop for a video so we can play "I Spy" with your more intricate sets. These are all just examples. For me personally, recognition-type rewards (like getting a shout-out on social media) are not big drivers. A little bit more access (like the BTS posts) are much more enticing. It's a little tricky because you give so much access to the show and how you think about it through the livestreams and I'd never want those to be paywalled, but something small along those lines I think would go a long way to get some of us up to a slightly higher tier.

I wonder if the reason people even expect that rewards will motivate people is that we're taught to think that way by capitalist ideologies. I think there was a video where you mentioned David Graeber's idea of "baseline communism" but that idea is with me all the time now. I wouldn't mind a whole video about it, for example a review of "Debt: The First 5000 Years"

Maybe you should explain to people that acting does not pay well? Because yea, I assumed you had made it as an actor being on one of the biggest shows out there, and that you could afford your lifestyle. Also how to do I say this. It’s not that you should use your own money to pay for the YouTube show. But that is kinda what you’re doing. We’re giving you money to live and support the show, and obviously you’re putting some of that back into the show But I assumed as your career branched out the show was more a labor of love rather than your full-time employment. Obviously your time is money, so I wouldn’t expect you to work on the show if you were actively losing money. So TLDR My assumption was that you were getting into acting, and the money there was enough to support yourself and YouTube was now the side hustle that you were doing out of love and loyalty (since it’s how you came up) and that you didn’t really need it. So maybe all that should be laid out for people?

I'm trying to remember why I signed up in the first place. There might have been a video that inspired me - maybe the 15 minute cities video? I was definitely excited about seeing the sequel to that one and wanted to make sure it happened. Or maybe it was an older one I watched, like the NHS/Catch-22 video. I think the video that got me interested in the channel in the first place was the Effective Altruism video. I had been curious about EA already - ever since I saw Hank Green do an ad read for 80,000 hours. I actually signed up for the EA intro program, and went through it, slowly feeling more frustrated and disillusioned with them. And then I saw your video and it brought all those problems into focus. But there were independent factors - I think I found out that Patreon had cancelled a lot of people's subscriptions without their consent, and I went in to check - it turns out mine had been cancelled. So I renewed the ones I wanted to renew, and added a few more, including your channel, Spice8Rack, Jessie Gender, and Andrewism.

Not that I don't value your time or work but I also support (checks notes) 55 other creators through Patreon and Substack, mostly. Plus I'm a Nebula subscriber. The odds of my increasing that are slim because my budget for this is kind of maxed out. - I subscribed after watching your content on YouTube. Loved it. Wanted to see more of it. Still do. Not that I don't appreciate and support your acting career but I'm mostly here for the philosophy explainers and deep relevant political insights. EG your ep on the fucked-up situation with the UK NHS was awesome. I sent that one to several friends. - Yes, I share your links but rarely on socials. Usually I send specific links to people I know who I think will be interested in the content. I am not the sort to post "rah rah Abi is great" (though you are) - it's just not my jam. I do try to share Nebula links when I can to get people to subscribe to that, but it's not very successful.

Some people move their pledges up sometimes; if you have, would you mind telling me what prompted you to do that? I have moved pledges up for some creators for specific perks I have wanted, such as access to additional videos and my name in the credits. What made you sign up to the Philosophy Tube Patreon? I remember exactly: Your call to action in your video about the NHS. I even paused the video to do it. Until that moment, I considered my nebula subscription as adequate support for your work. In your call to action you looked directly at me through the camera and woke me the fuck up. Would you ever share a creator's Patreon on your own socials, or with friends? Would you ever share this one? I wouldn't, because it sits in an awkward venn diagram: I wouldn't push a Patreon to friends unless I know they are already fans of a creator, and most friends who I know are fans are usually already Patreons. But I do promote Nebula to friends as "unionising for youtube creators". Nebula is a simpler idea and a organisation I really believe in, so it feels natural to shill for it. It also gets to my previous question - when allocating my entertainment budget, it can be difficult to justify both nebula and the patreons of several nebula creators. So nebula may be cannibalising some of your patrons.

So I lost my full-time job, moved down to a free member, then got this part-time job that pays enough for me to support some creators and i reupped my paid membership. I couldn't add back on all the creators I had been supporting, but I've been a fan of philosophy tube for a long time and remember how it was founded on the idea of offering education for free then transforming into this very entertaining, very well designed channel about philosophical questioning. Instead of accepting society's ills, we're asked to question the reasoning to how they came to be. Plus the music and aesthetic are gorgeous. There's elements of camp and horror combined with high concept designs. I'm absolutely here for it. Coming from a theater background, this is the type of media I want to see in the world. The Prince was fantastic. I've been a nebula subscriber for a while and it survived the subscription purge. Of my non-essential expenses, media and the arts are the primary portion followed by restaurant takeaways. I think I'm an anomalous kind of Patron: I don't even look at the perks and posts most of the time. Contributing to the work is my primary reason and, for a number of creators, hearing my name read out at the end of an episode is kinda thrilling. An example of something i couldn't do any more, even though I got a part-time job, listen to Well There's Your Problem podcast, because I don't commute anymore. TLDR: So being reminded to change/reinvest my pledge to Philosophy Tube when my circumstances changed for the better was helpful. It may be meager, but I feel that it's worth it.

I do wonder how many people think ‘she’s a successful actor now, she doesn’t need my support’ - from the comments above, a few people have expressed that view. I can understand people choosing to support ‘smaller’ creators instead. For my part: I signed up because I watched one of the vids (the Transhumanism one) and was so impressed by it I wanted to support on the spot. And subsequent videos have made me feel that was the right decision. The length of time between videos is frustrating sometimes, but we know you’re busy, and that they take a lot of time to put together. I suspect that math doesn't even out on the creator's end, unfortunately. I'll definitely revisit when I have an income again myself 🤦🏼‍♀️ Edited to add: I missed half the question! I did make the switch to Contrapoints paid tier for the "tangents." There's something about the lower production values that feeds my parasocial attachment way better than the fancy produced videos. I find unedited livestreams aren't focused enough for the time investment with my wild child-rearing schedule.

I usually support creators at a lower tier because I like the content, simple as that. Once or twice yearly I comb through all our family subscriptions in general and cancel a few. With content creators it's normally because I'm no longer watching/listening as much, or because there's fewer content to enjoy. I have little interest in higher tiers usually. To gain more traction, you could simply ask people to support you - no frills, just ask. Your content is awesome, you are amazing, own it and go forth!

You posted your coming out video about 2 weeks after I came out as a TransWoman to myself, to everyone I knew and to the world. I was feeling quite isolated and unsure and searching the internet for Trans information and community and connection and assurance I was not crazy. I was looking at Jessie Gender's YouTube channel when she posted a "Philosophy Tube has come out and why it means so much to me" video and immediately linked directly to you. No clue what Philosophy Tube was. I watched with an open heart, great vulnerability and all my hope. I'm not sure what I was hoping for but I was such an enormous, glowing ball of feelings, searching desperately for understanding and affirmation. I watched your coming out (of course assuming that Rhys was you). Such a powerful experience for me. Watching you walk through the door as Abigail and sitting down to talk and explain as yourself for the first time online. I was racked with sobs and filled with joy and was affirmed as me in all the ways I had been searching for. As never before and seldom since. You were powerfully emotionally imprinted in me as a part of my coming out experience and will be with me all of my years. If I were to claim to be 'your greatest fan' it would be trivializing my feelings. You, your voice and image, your mind, personality and creativity are woven into the roots of my life as a TransWoman. You have a part in my celebration of who I am. I had no idea what Patreon was and gave it no thought until watching the Catch-22 themed vid, "Emailed my doctor 133 times" and the moment when you explode with "Fucking Subscribe to my Patreon!!..." that I went looking for Patreon and was Celebrity Crush thrilled to sign up. I signed up initially to get early access to videos. But now i have nebula and don't need to. I do it still bc i want to support and can. I think that is the main reason i sign up to patreon at all -- to get a creators early access. That said, i did find the 15$ a bit steep for early access when nebula is 6$ a month. I feel most channels have that at the 5$ tier. It feels like the barrier to entry to get something meaningful is pretty high in this channel. If this wasn't my favorite channel i'd probably cancel, the perks of the lower tiers aren't really appealing. i think maybe having some "less early but still early access" or something for 5 or 10$ would be appealing to people, given the alternative is nebula.

I sign up when I really repeatedly enjoy content and feel like it needs to be supported/lifted (usually with a small contribution). 2019 for me here. I cancel, if I feel like I am not consuming the content as much any more (partly youtube's Algorithm) or like the content does not resonate with me as much any more. I don't really care about most bonus material, and I don't care about live streams. I have considered dropping my subscription, mostly due to the the appearance of less content than when I decided to subscribe (2019). Your content has changed a lot since, I feel. Much more refined and well-produced, but also less frequent and longer videos? Length and weight is an issue for me... Just makes it more "demanding" for me, i.e. requires more concentration. I would probably recommend to have some shorter videos sometimes. Also. I really liked your transparency on money in the past. Although the detail level seems to have decreased. Finally, -- and this is going to be tough and difficult to pose (I already see the hate coming. DO NOT read "I am not anti-LGTBQ" or anything, that is not what I want to say, all the power to everybody) -- I did not like listening to some of your most recent narrators. Most narrators are great... I would probably advice to look into the subscription date of people that are unsubscribing. (Financial situation might just be a way of saying "I have to budget and right now Philosophy Tube is not making the cut").

I sponsor a lot of content creators on patreon. Some I do top tier and some bottom tier or free. It really depends on the quality and quantity of the content. There are a few that haven't posted anything in months and in some cases for over a year so I don't sponsor them anymore. But if they start posting again i will reconsider. Usually the top tiers don't offer anything I want. To be honest a lot of creators seem to have youtube fatigue. It seems the pressure to create content frequently is too much for them. I can understand and relate to that. As for this channel, you stopped producing content of interest to me for quite a long time but i assume its because you are doing a lot more acting and therefor don't have the time. But i came to your channel because of the topics you covered. I'm always hopeful you will get back to the type of content you used to do. Would i post a link to this channel? - I have done so in the past for the youtube videos but not the patreon itself. Facebook has recently taken to deleting posts with links off of facebook so not sure we can even do this anymore. I'm not active on any other social media.

Perhaps you could cut together some footage from the making of episodes for Behind the scenes + bloopers/alternative cuts or cut scenes to make a little extra content that's exclusive to paid patreons. People are always pretty interested to hear about your behind the scenes creative process during the Post mortem Live streams, the outfit pics you post on socials with little explanations of how you and the team put them together, and I for one always find the bloopers amusing when you put them at the end of the videos. So I reckon you could combine all that into a video, if you can find the time.

I subscribed because I wanted to help ensure it kept going. The coming out video also touched me on an emotional level. Given the spirit of the channel, as I interpret it, is for the information to be shared wide, so I wasn’t expecting too much in terms of subscriber exclusive perks here. I also am a Nebula subscriber though, and I will say I like the exclusives. However, regular episodes are more fun to watch on YouTube with the live comments. I keep my current tier here partly for my ego I guess, I like being in the credits and to support the channel.

I support the work I want to make sure keeps happening, but when things get tight, I prioritize smaller creators who (I perceive) "need" it more. When you're like "y'all, I need money" I am more likely to keep this channel in my patron budget.

I'm on the lowest tier, and to be honest, I am on the lowest tier for all the Patreons I support. No one has ever really offered me an incentive to move to a higher tier that I wanted. I just want to chuck the minimum amount I can to help out. There could be a point that your lowest tier is less expensive than all but one other creator by 2-3x. I recently had to drop a few creators that I really liked because a lot of the slowed their output, which is really valid, but it meant that I just wasn't engaging with their work anymore. But with new creators that I had started to support, and the bloody cost of living going up, I really couldn't justify the cost. I barely manage to keep it under $50AUD/month as it is.

Acting does not pay well lol. I'm also curious - so, right now Philosophy Tube pays for itself, there's a bit of separation in the finances between the show as an entity and me as an individual. I signed up because of a few specific banger episodes. I love almost all your videos, but a few of them hit especially hard. The cosmonaut, identity, emailing 147 times with your doctor, Judith Butler. I don't share stuff on social media, I barely have any. But in real life I recommend you to all my friends that are even remotely interested in left-wing or philosophy content. For me, I support you because I want to support you, pretty regardless of the bonus content. The behind the scenes videos and the bloopers are the bonus content I most enjoy. All the other things are welcome but not necessary for me. I guess the parasocial relationship works better through videos than through pictures/e-mails for me, haha. I share a belief that others have voiced, in that a creator with a larger platform has to hit a higher emotional threshhold for me to support them versus a creator with a smaller platform. If the credits of a video are already this long, then to many it looks like the creator is doing just fine, and adding their name to that list is not changing much. In that sense, you might be a victim to your own success. Still, your content was and continues to be very educational, inspirational and formative for me, that is what I am here to support.

I haven’t changed my pledge level on your patreon, but I have upped in the past for other creators, and it was usually because of some new exclusive content. So I’m not sure what else you could offer, but is you, say, started doing a podcast with other left tubers or something (honestly just the first thing that came to my head and not even close to the best idea, probably) and made that exclusive to people subscribed to the tier above me or something (I cannot stress enough how important keeping it less than the price of a streaming service is - another YouTube channel I like has directors cuts for like 15 bucks or something and I signed up, binge watched and then dropped immediately, because that’s as much as it costs for some streaming services), I’d probably be all over that. No idea if you have time for any more projects or if my logic is the same as other people’s, but that’s my two cents

I became a member less for the content and more just to support the work itself (hence why I'm at a lower tier). I adore the main episodes (+ their respective livestreams), and so joined because I wanted to support their production, even if just a little bit. To that end though, I don't know if I'd jump up a tier. What I like about this platform is that it can keep various creators afloat, so I'd say I'm more likely to become a member of other creators' Patreons before going up a tier here just so I could spread my financial support a little further. That said, i think more casual videos could be good to maybe entice people? I consume everything you put out pretty much (ignoring when I can't watch for spoilers because I haven't gotten to HOT D season 2 yet :p) and reckon more chill content could bring people in. I thought the livestream highlight videos you've started doing this year were incredibly clever (you'd have the metrics to know if they were a success I assume), and think content like that but exclusive to Patreon could maybe help? .

Especially with creators who (like you ;)) progressed from "thoughts in front of camera" to "professional movie built on philosophical thought" i'd be willing to pay for shorter, less researched, less edited content, maybe the intresting tangent that came up in research but didn't fit the main video...

About signing up to patreon and moving up pledges, I'm afraid it's as you say, it entirely depends on my personal financial situation, not much you can do about it. I've had a list of creators I wanted to support when I had stable income, and that's what I've done as soon as I got a salary higher than an intern. I don't do it for any of the rewards, I'll take the discord access and early videos, but I don't use discord much ansd usually by the time I can see a video it's gone public anyway. Appearing in the credits feels warm, but I don't think I'd raise to any particular tier for that. It's the public videos and posts that brought me here in the first place and that is what would keep me here and make me reconsider how much to give. About sharing, I'll usually share videos or social media posts, not so much the patreon. I have shared public patreon posts I've found interesting though.

I am one of the cancellers this month. The main reason is perceived success in your other ventures which I am very happy to see. I know you've said explicitly you know it can all go away in a flash and that the channel is the backbone of what you do. However, for now I feel my money is better going to smaller channels. I did sign up to Nebula for a year though so this could be seen as a pivot to a different income stream. I also saw The Prince when it was on so for me it feels like the same money leaves me in your direction. Hope this is insightful.

I always find for me to sign up to a patreon usually requires either bonus material I really want to see, or some video having a real emotional connection with me. For this patreon I think it was the latter. When my financial situation has changed in the past, usually what makes me stay is bonus material. Personally, I'm never that fussed about livestreams (the format doesn't work for me), and while I always think the BTS pics are cool, I don't think it'd be enough for me to stay. On the other hand, I think a lot of podcasts have member only episodes which would mean I would be missing out on content I really enjoy if I unsubscribed. Likewise, some YouTube channels do this with deleted scenes, or full member only episodes like Contrapoints' tangents. Having that content there makes me less likely to leave once the emotional response that made me subscribe faded away.

Something that may entice some people to sign up for a higher tier might be mini-reviews of the philosophy books you're reading or even a book club. Something like a once a month video where you talk about what you've recently read and what you thought about it. If you can go e people a heads up as to what you're reading, it could almost function as a philosophy book club, It doesn't need to be high-prep, but for those that really want to engage more in philosophy it might be a good perk because it lets people engage even more with the philosophy. As you're already reading a lot, hopefully it won't significantly add to your workload.

I have a limited amount of disposable income and when I signed up for your patreon, you weren't as well-known as you are now. Basically I move the bit of cash I have from one creator to the next. I'm on someone's google family account so I have YouTube premium, it helps me feel a bit less guilty about all the creators I can't support directly, because at least (as I understand it) theres a better payoff from views with premium. Oh, I was one of the people who cancelled apparently! Yea, I had to cut a few creators because I'm broke. Honestly, and this is not meant to be something you're supposed to feel bad about, but I cancelled in part because of HOTD and all the other acting you're doing. That's great for you! But because I don't have the money to support all my creators (there are SO many) I try to prioritize based on who I watch the most and who I think needs it the most. I assumed you were making good money doing the other stuff I do still give Jenny Nicholson money despite her probably being richer than most now, but a the $2 level per month her exclusive monthly videos well worth that pledge, and since she rarely puts content on the main channel it makes sense to me. I'm hoping for a promotion next year. Hopefully I'll be back. Until then I do share videos that that I think others would like

However, I just thought that an interesting perk could be receiving some kind of "philosophy notes" — an interesting idea that you may have learned from your reading or elsewhere that's not big enough for a video but still thought-provoking. Maybe a little silly, but I used to be a member of a few artists patreons and I really enjoyed it when they posted polls for art related things. Maybe a patreon poll where we get to pick a prop or small set detail? It’s fun but also keeps current patrons engaged and feeling like they’re ~part of something~ and when the episode comes out, a large chunk of patrons will have a “hey it’s the thing I picked!” feeling. You could also tease things for upcoming polls on socials and bring people to patreon from there as well

I love the content and I was a supporter for awhile but as you mentioned my financial situation did change. A job loss and I became a full time student pursuing my Masters degree. I still watch the videos and I will become a supporter once my situation, job wise, changes.

I discovered you on Nebula and sometimes watch some of your videos. Nebula has no mechanism to communicate with creators so when a Patreon is available, I signup.

I'm subscribed ($20/m) strictly because I believe in the value of the work and I love what you're doing. I can't say that the Patreon provides much; there isn't an active community here, for example, and "early access" stopped existing since it releases on Nebula even before Patreon.

That’s a great idea! Having a little informal place for people to share their thoughts. Or perhaps making a post every so often about a book that you’re reading for the next video for people to share and feel like they’re reading alongside you!

I definitely think people don't have much context for what an actor's income is like, even (especially?) for "big" shows like House of the Dragon. Or there might be a perception that sure, they're paid peanuts at first, but then they have a "big break" and the money starts rolling in - right?

Having a mid tier bonus content level usually gets me to increase my sub. I've done it for a book club and a weekly group meditation. The content doesn't have to be that much extra work even. Could be you just reading bits from philosophy books you thought were insightful.

In answer to your questions, I would convert to a paid pledge if I had more money, I would raise my pledge to a higher tier if I had even more money, and I want to be a paid member because I want to support the way you distribute knowledge without charge. Basically, fuck capitalism

The biggest reason I pledge to a patreon, besides and obligation to compensate artists for their work that I regularly consume, is to get access to all their content. Frequent additions of shortform content behind the paywall would certainly have incentivized me, were I not already pledging.

The only thing I can think of is more short content between larger releases, and make it exclusive to patreon.
