The history of homoeroticism in wrestling is as old as the first olympic games in ancient Greece. In fact, the original male contestants were nude and free, a joyous, voyeuristic celebration of the youthful male form, in time when sexual relations between men did not conflict with masculine sport identity. Today, wrestling and other similar sports often remain a complicated contradiction of male expression- heightened sensual displays of perfect bodies in close, loving contact-- governed by a modern close-minded idea of masculinity and sexuality, brought on by hundreds of years of puritanical dogma.
This is what inspired me to collage these photos of Bulgarian wrestling matches I found online several years ago. There's a sad anger in the eyes of these beautiful boys, as their sensual showmanship is corrupted through a system of contention and battle. Is this stifled erotic energy as overwhelming to you as it is to me?
