After connecting on instagram, Matthew and I rented a hotel room in southwestern Connecticut to explore with my camera. A longtime follower and aspiring model, Matthew trusted my vision and allowed me to pose him throughout the building in various states of undress. Checkered boxers in bed. Sports jersey on the concrete steps outside. Mardi gras beads and tight blue briefs. I brought a large bag of clothing and props for us to pull from and experiment with. Textures and colors to juxtapose and recolor in my edits.
23-year-old Matthew produces fashion events in New York City, where he enjoys very active night life. Since I live a quiet, rural life, I had some questions for him, particularly about the gay clubs he attends. He chuckled at my naïveté, but answered honestly, and kindly encouraged me to go out and party with him in the city. One particularly salacious anecdote of his still sticks in the back of my mind- detailing Matthew's fondness for being dominated by multiple men at a time. This sexual energy courses through these images, shining in Matthew's dark eyes, throbbing in pink behind wet underwear in the shower.
There's a wild exhibitionist quality to Matthew's personality that sticks with me. A great, raw pride that I might not have been ready to capture; but capture it, I had to. In our hotel room, a beautiful fractured mirror hung across from the bed. I was fascinated with the way it broke Matthew into pieces between its panes. You can find a rare shot of me with a model through this mirror (in the last image in the set). A gorgeous memory.
