Ryan's Dorm

A fan of my work, Ryan reached out on instagram, telling me that he would love to model nude, although he had never tried anything like it before. A 20-year-old college film student, he was excited to discuss and contribute to the creative direction of the photoshoot. We shared our favorite sources of inspiration from photographers like Bruce Weber and Herbert List and shared photos of clothing and props to choose from.
After we spent the day on on the Rhode Island cliffside (see the last photo set), we returned to Ryan’s dorm to clean up. The dorm bathroom/group shower was an excellent location to pose him, and continue our rhythm of challenge and acceptance. Any minute another student could walk right in, but that didn't stop him from handing over his towel to reveal pink, gleaming skin. Sometimes you gotta live life on the edge to get the perfect shot. Afterwards, we went back to his room to shoot some more intimate portraits. Luckily, his roommate wasn’t around! Ryan was very brave in sharing his body and openly expressing his vulnerability. He later said;
“Being nude on camera for the first time was nerve wracking but also exciting. Ryan made the whole experience very comfortable and liberating. I’ve never been super happy with my body, but through this project I’ve learned to accept it a little more and see that all bodies and types of masculinity are valid.”
