While we have learned more in the two years since this reaction I still wanted to comment. You seemed taken aback about "memory" Rick's comment about "shacking up with a version of our dead daughter". Recall in the episode when they showed a memory of how he invented the portal gun, his wife and daughter were killed. Of course he later said it was a fake backstory, but this hints that at least that part has some truth to it.
