Lingthusiasm anniversary episode in November - Recommend, Review and Relisten!
Added 2017-11-10 08:02:32 +0000 UTCNovember is the 1-year anniversary episode of Lingthusiasm! To celebrate a whole year of enthusiastic linguistics podcasting, we’re aiming to hit another milestone at the same time: 100,000 listens across all episodes. We’re currently just above 95.5k, so it’s totally doable!
This time last year, Lingthusiasm was a top-secret project that no one had listened to yet (though we had actually already recorded two of the three episodes we launched with). Now, we've produced 13 + 9 = 22 episodes, upgraded our recording equipment, and gotten to a stage where 100k listens looks like a reasonable goal.
Here's a little secret: when we started the show, we weren't sure how long we'd be able to keep it up for. We both have long-running linguistics blogs, and the idea of committing to another zero-budget project was daunting, even as we were excited about getting to explore public linguistics in a different format. It's thanks to the support that we've received so far on Patreon that we're super energized about keeping Lingthusiasm going for many years to come. You're true patrons of the arts and sciences, making this independent linguistics podcast possible for all listeners.
(Recently, linguistics students have been telling us how Lingthusiasm is helping them with their classes, so you can also totes take credit for helping broke students get As. Take that, Medici family!)
You already do a lot for the show and we very much appreciate it, but every time more people listen to Lingthusiasm, some of them decide to become patrons. And the more patrons we have, the closer we get to full-length episodes and a full-scale liveshow. (We've also been working on some further milestone goals that we're looking forward to sharing soon!)
Honestly, if you just want to relax and know you're already contributing a whole bunch to the show, that's also totally cool with us, but since you've got a personal stake in getting to full-length bonus episodes faster, we thought we'd let you know about the push to 100k listens. If you feel like helping us along, here's a couple ideas:
- Share a link to your favourite Lingthusiasm episode so far and say something about what you found interesting in it. If you link directly to the episode page on lingthusiasm.com, people can follow your link and listen even if they’re not normally podcast people. Can’t remember what was in each episode? Check out the quotes for memorable excerpts or transcripts for full episode text.
- We appreciate all kinds of recs, including social media, blogs, newsletters, fellow podcasts, and recommending directly to a specific person who you think would enjoy fun conversations about language!
- If you didn’t get around to listening to a couple episodes when they came out, now is a great time to get caught up!
- Write a review on iTunes or wherever else you get your podcasts. The more reviews we have, the more that the Mighty Algorithms make us show up to other people browsing. Star ratings are great; star ratings with words beside them are even better.
- There's a slightly different public version of this post with links to all the episodes so far, if you're looking for a concise thing to share.
All of our listeners so far have come from word of mouth, and we’ve enjoyed hearing from so many of you how we’ve kept you company while folding laundry, walking the dog, driving to work, jogging, doing dishes, procrastinating on your linguistics papers, and so much more. But there are definitely still people out there who would be totally into making their mundane activities feel like a fascinating linguistics party, they just don’t know it’s an option yet. They need your help to find us!
If you leave us a rec or review in public, we’ll thank you by name or pseudonym on our special anniversary post next month, which will live in perpetuity on our website. If you recommend us in private, we won’t know about it, but you can still feel a warm glow of satisfaction (and feel free to tell us about it on social media if you still want to be thanked!).
You may also want to check in on the Lingthusiasm twitter account, where we've been periodically livetweeting when the stats counter is about to tick over to a round number. I swear, it's way more riveting than it sounds, there's witty banter and poorly-designed polls and everything.
