It's interesting to see a lot of different points of views on this show. It's fun to see how much you dislike Mal, I feel like you're really getting the intent the writers had for him, which was to be morally grey, and kind of annoyingly old-fashioned (or maybe that's just the early-2000s points of views of the writers bleeding through). You also noticed how he's the only character giving Inara shit for being a prostitute, not just because he likes her and is jealous, but because he looks down on the profession, even though it's considered respectable by everyone else. I do take some issue with the men you've thought suitable for various characters, romantically. First the rich douchebag from the shindig episode for Inara, and in this episode Jayne for Saffron. Jayne just tried to actually trade his gun for Saffron, calling her "it" in the process, and the guy from the shindig one also clearly only saw Inara as a possession. Yet you seemed kind of down with both of them. So it got me thinking: are people from your generation maybe more comfortable seeing romantic interests as transactional? I know all of our minds are screwed up from constant commercial programming, but y'all had to grow up around the most pervasive form of it. I wonder if being exposed the kind of late-stage capitalist propaganda machine we have today has had an effect. We have certainly become even more materialistic than we were back when the show first aired. Or maybe I'm full of shit and overthinking things. Who cares anyway, aint nobody gonna read this 2 AM rant. Anyway, great reaction lol.
