“I heard about the conversation you had with Alec last night,” Beatrice says.
Eliza’s face heats up another ten degrees.
Beatrice pulls her closer to her chest. “Don’t you see? I understand you’re curious but…these things are scary. They’re bound to give anyone nightmares.”
“I-It wasn’t a nightmare —“ Eliza objects quickly. Was it?
“Whatever it was,” Beatrice says, her voice firm now, “it means extra laundry for me. Isn’t that right?”
Eliza blushes anew, opens her mouth…then bites her lip.
“This always happens. You want to know more about that world…” Beatrice muses, shaking her head. “But you aren’t ready for it. Not yet.”
“I am ready for it, mom!” Eliza exclaims, pushing herself away. “I’m about to go to college!”
“Right,” Beatrice says wryly. “And how many other young women at college do you think are wetting the bed?”
Eliza’s face collapses under the sheer weight of humiliation.
But her mother’s voice is kind. “You made a mistake,” she coos. “Mistakes happen. But I don’t want you asking Alec about his life as a warlock any more…understand me? I don’t care how curious you are. You’ll be ready when you’re ready. Then we’ll talk.”
Eliza bites her lip harder and nods her head, tears still brimming.
“And now,” Beatrice says, “since you’ve made a mess for me…again…we need to talk about your punishment.”
