Earthquake (1974) *Reaction*

Comments

I was knocked out of my bunk bed during the 1971 Sylmar Quake they mentioned in the movie. I was 10 years old when this film came out in ‘74 and still living in So Cal. Like you said in your reaction, earthquakes are just a way of life in California. I also went through the October ‘89 quake in the Bay Area. The office I was in was heavily damaged. Needless to say, I moved to Nevada shortly afterwards.

Thanks for reacting to one of my favorite disaster films of all time David! Here are some Earthquake trivia! 1) Earthquake won an Oscar for Best Sound and a Special Achievement Award for Visual Effects. 2) John Williams scored both Earthquake and The Towering Inferno in the summer of 1974. 3) A studio gimmick and technique called Sensurround using bass sound speakers was used in theaters showing Earthquake. The theater would shake during the quake sequences. 4) The earthquake in this film is supposed to be a 9.9 and lasted 9 minutes. However, scientists say such an earthquake cannot happen in California because California's faults are mega thrust slip faults. So the highest a California earthquake can be is 8.3 and last only 4 or 5 minutes.
